wycome5
I need to buy a coffin for under £50 that can be carried and looks to be made of wood. Cardboard is not suitable as it is for outdoor use with the potential of wind and rain. They are available for this sort of money from America but because they are wood the shipping is high. This is an American example http://www.frightcatalog.com/Halloween-Pro...Coffin-1004001/
beware
Should be able to get one out of 2 sheets of 1/2" ply. some bits of 2x1" and some wood screws. Varnish it up nicely, add some shoe polish for authenticity, et voila.
mac.calder
Can you not build one - use either plywood or MDF, stencil on a decal, use some scraps to build the sealing screws (maybe paint them gold) - it is a fairly simple project, and not overly expensive. tivoliproduction
there is a coffin manufacturer in the south west of the uk, they often have ones that are damaged, speka to your local friendly funeral director and offer them programme advertising or something and they may be able to sort something out for you. if you need any other help then let us know, how big does the coffin need to be? paulears
I wouldn't have thought they'd want to advertise, but a mention would be good - that said, we built one in an hour, and with a dose of stain, and a bit of varnish, it looked pretty good. The most difficult part is getting the angles of the side panels correct, so they meet properly at the joint - but most bench saws will do this simply. B&Q and the others sell nice routed edging that can simply be glued on. They also have gold coloured handles for the sides.
wycome5
Making one would be a possibility but if we could buy one it would be better and is likely to look more realistic. The coffin needs to be full sized but I like the idea of speaking to a local funeral director. It is for my Halloween event (The Halloween Experience) just as part of the opening scaremonies. paulears
It may not be a good idea to promote you want one for halloween type events. Undertakers are peope with strong views on their profession - they may help a stage show, but might not want to be involved with the type of thing you are planning? They will say "what do you want to do with it?" - you need a safe and secure answer

Jivemaster
Make or Buy seems best, There is an undertaker's sundriesman near me, I'll look for a phone No. There may well be one near you, Also the big ones are HEAVY. AW Lymn in Nottingham have their own coffin makers on site and may well help, may charge well also.
Ynot
I need to buy a coffin for under £50 Hi.Whilst nowhere near the quality of the one in the US ad you linked, we have a coffin in our props stores that could well help you out - you'll need to collect, but you're not that far off in Northampton. There are pics on our props web pages, along with gravestones and a small cauldron. PM me if you're interested. TD

crewgurl
I got one for a production I did before. Went into a funeral home and asked them for their cheapest possible coffin...they thought I was mad! But ended up giving me one for free that we could keep. It was a really basic one that they had got as a sample and wouldn't be using. Was wooden but not too heavy to carry. Its worth a try!
