dannyboi
Which is better for 'stage' use but also good for a music concert? My options at the moment are:> Martin MX4> Martin Roboscan 812 I like the look of the Martin MX4 but then again it all about performance. Are both the lights dimmable? and which has got the best gobo's. I am intending on using this light as an effect in 'Aliens Attack' as a UFO searchlight and colour strobe effect. Thanks for looking. ThomJ
I believe both RS812 and MX 4 do not dim. However of the two the MX1 has more colours and more gobos (fixed) If you want to compare the 2 effect on the Martin Website you will have to go to www.martin.com/service because the 812 has been disscontinued and no longer show up as a product. In theory the MX 4 should be brighter because of the improvement in optics in the years since the 812 was introduced. Hope thats of some help Thom

dannyboi
I believe both RS812 and MX 4 do not dim.True I have looked at the martin website and have found they don't, but did find in the DMX protocol that the MX4 had more option; gobo's, lamp effects, colours. I have also found both the units ware only 150W which wouldn't compete with 500W or 1000W floods. I think the best for a UFO searchlight effect would be the MX4. What kind of price would you think is good for this kind of unit? Has anyone used both these units? are these things quick to pan and tilt? P.S. the RS918 sound really good though! :)
Rich newby
Pretty much Andrew. The only thing I would say is how bright do you want your rig to be? If we could we would all use 2kw Fresnel's and Mac2000's and not use 500w Fresnel's and Mac250's, but we don't. There are impracticality's of using brighter lights with more effects and features than are needed. Another thing, he didn't spec the Martin 918's, he specced the 812, which only has a 150w discharge lamp. In this case I would reccomend the MX-4. It is a generally nicer and better built light. I always think of the roboscans an being a disco feature, with the MX-1,Mx-4 and MX-10 being the professionals choice. Oh and im not sure whether you have already noticed this but on the martin site The MX-1's lamp is 100w more powerful. However the MX-4 Is actually brighter because it has a Discharge lamp, whereas the MX-1 is a ELC Halogen. Oh and a few links for you,The MX-1 ManualThe MX-4 ManualThe 812 ManualThe 918 Manual HTHRich EDIT: Andrew has relised and edited his post. :) ;)
ThomJ
I have use the 812 regularly and the pan and tilt is quick like most scans, I suppose the MX4 might be faster as its a newer unit but the naked eye would be pushed to tell the diff. I don't really know what a used unit is going to cost you but, I can tell you the a 918 is basically a scan version of a Mac 500 so they would be expensive (even used ones) but they would do everything you want and more. luisdjar
MX4 use philips cdmt150 lamp, that lamp has more light output, life hours and is cheaper, than the hti150, used by 812.
