Smoke machine maintenance

My little Antari smoke machine (700W), when fully warmed up and activated, has just started to make a short burst of smoke then nothing. Give it 15 seconds or so and it'll give another short burst and so-on. It used to happily smoke for a good 20 or 30 seconds before the heater came on again

 

I've removed the pump and reservoir and have set it going just to see if it's working. It seems to run and pumps a drop of water every 2 seconds or so. Is this about right? I can't imagine it'd be much faster than this or the reservoir would empty in minutes.

 

The pipe through the heater unit doesn't seem to be blocked. I'm puzzled.
