wycome5
I need to make The Tardis appear. It is a Dr Who event, outdoors so any stage arrangement is pretty much possible. I originally thought of a solid top and base with material walls that are pushed up wards making it appear. Also, building the whole thing and hinging it backwards and out of sight then we use audience blinders or pyros, push it up and it appears. Any more ideas? Andrew C
I like your first idea. Add smoke and a trap so "The Doc" can get into it through the floor and you're on a winner.
wycome5
I was thinking of only having The Doctor as a silloette and working that into the story somehow but The Daleks, Davros and The Cybermen should all appear in 'real' format.

BenWall
If any staging is possible, I would suggest (even though I think your first idea is good), putting a trap in on hydraulics. However I am no expert when it comes to the use of hydraulics, so not 100% sure how fast you could make the appearance- I assume fairly fast. To cover the appearance I would personally avoid the use of pyro's, it sort of reminds me of panto when the genie or fairy appears?!?! I would make it more of a 'big issue' than trying to hide it... It's going to pretty obvious where it has come from so why try and hide it? Maybe make it part of the experience for the audience. When the tardis appears you could use dry ice to cover the hole/trap itself, maybe a burst of smoke out of the trapdoor and some fairly serious blue strobing. Mixed with the classic sound of the tardis appearance sfx I think you could be on for a winner! I really am not a fan of when people try and hide the obvious, it usual looks better when you 'go to town' to make it look good on the appearance (unless your a illusionist :) ) - but that's my opinion! HTH, Ben. Just found an interesting link on the theme of Dr. Who, mainly for Daleks, Tardis and Cybermen. VERY expensive but worth a look for a few ideas maybe?? Seano
Maybe a different approach?Instead of trying to keep the Tardis out of sight entirely, would it be possible to disguise/reveal it some other way? Where is it going to be? Is there any staging at all? Is the area solely going to be for the tardis, or will it be used as a "stage" area even if theres no stage. Is it in the round? (ie: do you need all 4 sides of the box?)
wycome5
Anything is possible as this is a Dr Who event, this effect is quite a key one.
Bobbsy
Don't forget that the Tardis sound effect is VERY distinctive. Using this will help to encourage the necessary "suspension of disbelief" if the physical effect isn't perfect. Bob
andy_s
I have a feeling that if you really want the tardis to materialise like it does on telly, it's not hydraulics or holes in the floor you need to consider, but mirrors and conjuring experts. Tomo
Lifting the roof and having the 'walls' pop up simultaenously (either material or folding) is probably the best way to go. Do this fast with plenty of smoke, and the distinctive housekey key along a piano wire, and Robert's your father's brother.
BenWall
I have a feeling that if you really want the tardis to materialise like it does on telly, it's not hydraulics or holes in the floor you need to consider, but mirrors and conjuring experts. Unless you are willing to spend thousands of pounds on one effect I don't see this as realistic. I have worked with a professional illusionist and if you were to hire him for consultation it would make your eyes water when the bill arrived. What you are asking them to do is reveal how some of the best kept secrets in magic are done/operated and this is really not a cheap thing to do. If you are looking to do this properly (with an illusionist) you are going to need specialist people with VERY specialist equipment. I do not feel this is something that you can just construct and do yourself, If you get it wrong then it will look totally awful. But that's my opinion, however if you do want to go down this road with the use of a professional illusionist I have got a good contact, PM me if your interested! Ben. Guest lightnix
It's only a basic idea, but I'm wondering about the potential for a collapsible TARDIS made mainly from cloth, which could possibly rise out of the floor, amid clouds of smoke and eerie lighting effects. PS - I believe that the TARDIS sound effect is known among Dr. Who anoraks fans as the "The Zworp" and that its "main ingredient" was/is the sound of a coin being dragged along a piece of piano wire.
