moving light servicing kit

Hi all,

just wondering what people have to hand if they are going to do a full service of a ML, such as a mac 500, including spares to take like short M4 screws, etc.

also what do people expect from a full service? a break down and clean down of everything, and check that everything is working correctly, but is there anything else I'm managing to forget!

Erm,tough one.

I'm sure we could write a list of tools etc but I'm not sure that without having a complete stock of everything for the unit your repairing you could do a full service.

I realise that's really badly worded but what I mean is what are you going to do if threes an igniter problem for example?

yeah, the units I'm going to are full functional with no errors, but rather dusty! they apparenlty havent been opened in over 3 years, its not tools so much but general things like preferred cleaning cloths, good cleansing fluids (if any) to use

make sure you clean the lenses, gobos and colours so they are spotless. use isoclens (or any other high alcohol content (98%) cleaners). get some long matches (about 4 or 5) and wrap them with tape. Around this wrap some high quality paper toweling or a very clean cloth. put the isoclens on the cloth around the sticks. this makes it easy to clean the lenses etc. To clean the fans use a vacuum cleaner or compressed air. do not let the fans spin too quickly. to clean the outsides use a foaming antistatic cleaner.

If you're using compressed air, you might want to get a dust mask, as the brown fur that collects inside units isn't very nice... especially if you blow it around, and then work in the same area for a while, breathing it in etc....

Isopropol alcohol and lint-free cloths.

Cleans everything.

However:

Never, ever clean the graphite off an iris. You'll never get graphite back in, and it'll weld together extremely quickly without it.

And only clean the grease/oil off other lubricated surfaces if you have some to replace it with.

Air dusters are my main tool. You can buy air duster canisters that are re-fillable by compressor - like this one. They have the advantage of not being throw-away, and if you are going to do servicing on a regular basis, are a good thing to have.

Instead of the lint-free cloth wrap arround, I would suggest you purchase proper lint free swabs, just make sure you NEVER use cotton swabs (long q-tips) and NEVER EVER use a vac on suck mode inside an electrical device (they tend to cause a lot of static)

Hi,

I always find Optical instrument cleaner works well for the lenses and the colour wheels, also mirrors if you ever need to clean a moving mirror projector.

Also some 3 in one oil for the moving parts is good as it is not to viscous and can withstand the high temperatures sometimes found in high power inteligent lighting. As mentioned before foam cleaner for the exterior of the fixture I always use lint free cloths, just beacuse we have them around for cleaning glass where I work.

Remember to ignite the matches first, then put them out so that they arnt going to start burning in the middle of your service.

If your going to be working on Mac's reguarly I recommend you go down to Martin and do a few of the courses. They have a very good set up down there training wise and I can personally recommend attending one of there courses.

a number of manufactures actually recommend Vac's over compressed air... personally I opt for compressed air just make sure you have an instrument in the fans to make sure they dont spin or you may blow your up a pcb.

I did the courses upto 500/600 last may, however the 4 times I've had to go into a mac since then, its been to realign a hall sensor! I don't want to forget to take anything with me, hence the question!

Its quite important to note that lint free cloths should only be used in most moving lights.

Dichroic colours, mirrors and reflectors can all have the special coating rubbed away by using ordinary tissues.

The Purpose made swabs Mac mentioned are great too... Would recommend them
