steve1159
The simple answer is yes and no. :) Yes-If there is a reasonable level of smoke you can colour the smoke with any coloured light. In the case of UV is will look purply/blue. No-However you are effectively using the UV as a coloured light and not in the conventional sense of UV where you would need something that is UV reactive such as special types of paint or makeup that actually glow when exposed to UV. You may find more assistance can be offered if you could give some indication of the proposed setup and what effect you are trying to achieve. ankersandrew
normal smoke with parcans in lee 181 congo blue sometimes better than uv ;) - Hi there and welcome to the Blue Room :( Just a note to say that after a :) session, we felt this was more a lighting than FX question (even if it does have smoke in) and moved the thread. Silver_Rayne
181 is probably the better way to go with this one. I cant recall ever seeing uv reactve smoke/haze fluid during my travels. Could you use snow instead of smoke? that should have sufficient area to reflect uv. Is a bit on the messy side but would look the nuts. (note to self try this)
wycome5
They used pink/purple and green on snow and it looked really good. It was green directly under the machine and a purple/pink to either side.
Silver_Rayne
ok I have had a bit of a play, and I can say that UV isn't a good way foreward on this even with snow. As wycome5 said coulors look cool. 181 gave a good result as did 115 (peacock blue). The key is back and top light giving you good transparency. Back is better than top in my mind but thats more the kind of rigs I get given to do. Allow a little extra tech time and have a play around see what suits your show realy. Silver_Rayne
181 and 115 are standard LEE gels. prod your drama studio tech and they can supply. Smoke machien your prolly better off with a hire job. if your hiring mebey a hazer would be good to look at. talk to your studio techs they might even have one or know the best place localy to go for one. sparkyweb
Digressing slightly, I have never seen UV smoke fluid. As far as the UV bubble liquid is concerned that gives a really good effect. We have used the Le Maitre fluid before without any problems. The only slight flaw was if it got onto clothes (or scenery) it would stain if a UV light was applied and the clothes required washing a couple of times before they were good againMark

We have yet to test it in a machine and see whether the smoke actually reacts to UV, but Im guessing there will be some reaction... Will let you know when we've tested!
