Lantern Safety Chain Quickie!

Morning all,

Just recieved a call from a couple of leckies that were in doing maintenance to a lighting system im working with soon, (replacing bulbs), anyway, they seem to think they may have left the safety chain off one of the lanterns, albeit, its a new light, but I know that it could still fall

Anyway, its in a school and they have a show soon, bars cant drop so we need a genie. Can the show still go ahead or is there a "no go" issue if this one chain is off.

They have assured me its safe and the G clamp is tight, but I dont want to risk it.

Any suggestions?

Phone up the electricians who were being paid to carry out maintenance, and who by their own admission think they may have left it in an unsafe state. Tell them to fix it, now, at their expense. Or offer to get someone else in to sort it, and bill the electricians.

End of story.

You have already identified a hazard . If you let the show proceed and the lantern does fall how will you explain to the HSE ( worst case scenario ) or to your employers how it happened ? The other sparkies have failed to do their job properly , get them back to fix it . I suggest you read The Management of Health and Safety Regulations (1999) regulation 14 and regulation 4 . There are other regulations that apply but YOU could fall foul of these .

Surely it's just a case of getting the school caretaker or technician to just do it? The same space probably has ordinary lighting that has bulbs that go - do you really get outsiders in to re-lamp, focus and gel your lighting?

What it is, the "theatre" area of the school is owned by Jarvis, and the old building by the local council (the buildings are joined). Anyway, the grid is normaly the same, the people that use it don't normally have fancy lighting ideas. Therefore I didnt want to use an open white grid with half the bulbs dead. The school "tech" doesn't have a clue what to do, or have the energy. So Jarvis save them self hassle and just get people in during maintenance. But I simply told them what colour where - so hopefuly its done properly!

Anyway, ill find out the whole story later today and will let you know.

Now im off to the dentist!

A light 'fell apart' while it was being worked on - yep, they do that sometimes when catches get a bit worn. Old patt 123's did that quite often when the clip started to round over. What I don't quite see is where the safety would have helped? Depending on what it was, the safety would stop the main body falling if the clamp failed, or the technician dropped it off the bar - but what bit would fall? I'm a bit confused.
