gareth
Yup, Andi's right about the point I was making. There's been lots of talk about how a Congo can deal with a Strand showfile - but unless it will deal with a complete showfile, including effects, groups, subs, macros and attribute information for moving lights and scrollers, its usefulness is limited and it's not really doing what it says it'll do. The whole point of being able to load a disk into a console is to avoid having to crunch a load of numbers in by hand. If I'm touring a show with a Strand console disk that has scroller information and some effects as part of the programming, for example, and I go into a venue that's got a Congo, the simple question is - will I be able to load the show directly into the Congo with all the programming remaining intact? Or will it only load the bits it understands and leave me to crunch the rest of it in by hand? If the latter scenario is the case, then the desk is not importing the complete SSF file, it's jus doing what any other desk that can read ASCII files would be able to do with a Strand disk that had been 'Showported'. Nick S
To bump this thread up with some news and grumblings... ...so, the OS for the Congo got updated today, and they've also changed some of the key caps for which new ones have to be ordered (for free) from ETC.... mumbles
Currently there is the congo and the congo junior are listed on the on the consoles section of the Europe part of www.etcconnect.com. However, on the USA part, there is also the Eos advertised. Does anyone know if the Eos is coming over here as well? and if so when?
Simmo
I’m sure ETC are releasing the Eos at LDi this year. Eos will be over for Plasa but will only be viewed by the invited few as it was at ABTT. It is a very nice desk from what I’ve seen so far. AndrewR
Just to continue my grumbling about the Congo... Am I being dim or are the changes in buttons on the Congo not actually listed in the update notes? The section headed 'notable changes' doesn't mention them. In fact the only mentions I saw are the allusion to a new 'Home Attributes' button (but no mention of where it is) and the mention of who to contact to get the new keys... Yay. Any clues anyone? :D (I actually want to use the new software before the keys arrive) And seeing as I have been banging on about a lot of the stuff in the 'fixed bugs section' (flash keys anyone?) I'm a little hurt that ETC haven't contacted me to tell me about the update.... :D
Tomo
Four keys have been renamed on Congo – the INTENSITY key becomes HOME ATTRIBUTES; UPDATE PB becomes REFRESH; MASTER MODE becomes MASTER; and CUE becomes EFFECT.Key-cap kits can be ordered free of charge from the ETC Web site. Congo Junior officially launches at PLASA 2006 - I think it's really cute!
AndrewR
I'm confused... my Congo doesn't have a MASTER MODE button...but it does have a MASTER button already. And its nice to see that the button that has replaced CUE doen't actually do anything :P
graffsy23
Hi, I had my first hands on time with a congo today, and some live work with it tomorrow, assisted by inhouse tech and he was saying that it does not import certain data such as macros, attributes etc
Gwion
I wonder if someone can assist me with my quest for a new lighting deskI've been looking into a few options, and the latest is a Congo Jr.We are a (receiving) theatre/multi purpose venue. A lot of the shows we do are stacked as ques, but also, esspecially for classiccal concerts, I at the moment use submasters.Without the Playback wing with the Jr, is there a way to do nomething similar? (Maybye 'groups' of lighting that can be wheeled in and out as needed - Conductor group, solo group, piano group, general cover group, and that will not affect each other)Also, how about moving light busking without a playback wing?If I'm to get a Jr, the budget will not stretch to a Playback wing also. Untill next budget time!Cheers allGwion

Without the playback wing, you still have access to most of the Master functions - but it's less easy to get to.The thing you lose is the Flash buttons. Basically, you set the ten buttons across the top of the console into Master mode - this turns the ten buttons into the Master Keys. You can press and release them to get the usual Master Key functions (assigning/start/stop etc), or hold them down and use the level wheel to fade them in and out. Alternatively, if you only want to bring Intensities up and down (without changing any parameters), you could use Groups instead of Masters:Type the number, then hold "Group" and move the level wheel to bring them in/out, keeping the relative intensities. When it comes to busking movers - you still have quick access to the Direct Selects, but only one bank of 10 (eg 10 Focus palettes) at a given moment. So while not ideal, it is still perfectly possible - the challenge is that you need to use more button hits and be very confident with the console keypad functions, rather than the ease of pushing up a fader or hitting a Direct Select. - To give you some idea of what is possible without a fader wing, the Damien Rice tour mentioned on the ETC website was using a Congo Jr without a wing, as it made touring much simpler due to the small size of the console. Gwion
:) Thank you...I'm leaning towards the Congo Jr route, BIG TIME by now!I understand there might be a smaller playback wing on the horizon, which would make things much easier to busk shows. In the meantime, I hope to be able to go down the Jr route.Any further comments about operation without the wing would be most welcome.CheersGwion
