Jamtastic3
Well BR, you know this thread was going to start.... I have to say, the Aussie's pulled it off BIG TIME. Just too many good things to say about it. I did notice that it felt like watching a movie of some Steven Spielberg type. It might have been the classical music, it might have been the guys with pyros on their backs skiing around the ice rink, it might have been the lighting rig above the centre podium that looked like something out of Blade Runner. Whatever it was, all the magic was captured. Very professional and very ceremonious. It was just great!
ankersandrew
just loved the flying bus and the skaters with fireworks on their backs
feeta
Pretty spectatular pyro finale display too!
GridGirl
I thought the whole thing was done really well - the flying tram to start off with was great. Apparently Delta Goodrem was not quite so happy though - apparently she was a bit concerned about being surrounded with pyros - there's an article here about it - I'm not sure that "potentially dangerous pyrotechnic displays" is doing justice to the effects crews though, I do wish people would get their facts straight before writing things like that! I also loved the ballet part of the ceremony, thought it was nicely done. Anybody know who did the flying?
mac.calder
I must admit, from the small bit I saw, they did a magnificent job... which rather surprised me due to the incompetence of steve bracks (our Premier) and the officials in his party - most of us were expecting him to have "Royally Bracksed it up". Pleasently surprised. BTW: IIRC the budget was 30mil (AUD I assume) and the thing was overseen by an American company
dbuckley
I enjoyed, though did mention to the missus as we were watching - "I'd like to see the risk assessment for those back-pack pyros".
Chris Beesley
Any idea how they pulled off the projections? Almost magical how they changed the feel of the arena through the whole ceremony. Chris
dbuckley
I suspect exactly the same way they dd the Winter Olympics. Someone somewhere (and I think it was here) listed exactly what they used, but I cant find the post, sometimes search is not your friend But from memory there were 16 projectors in two rows of 8 with keystone correction lenses and some fancy software that splits the picture up. General comment: TV presentation isn't terribly good...
Rob Halliday
Projection was twenty-five PIGI projectors projecting onto the stage; the edge of the stage was actually raked (which wasn't terribly obvious on the tv coverage) which helped the projection. The challenge was apparently that, while the stage was circular, the venue itself isn't as circular as it might appear so no two projectors shared the same film-scale or pre-distortion. Projection was by Peter Milne and his company The Electric Canvas in Sydney, www.theelectriccanvas.com.au; they also did the projection for the Sydney Olympics opening and closing ceremonies amongst many other events. mackerr
Suprised Delta Goodrum wasnt upset by that much highly explosive Xenon!Xenon lamps may "explode", but that would be the glass part due to the extreme temperatures and pressures, there is no combustion involved. Xenon gas is not explosive, it is one of the so called "noble gasses". That is why it is used in those lamps. Was Ric Birch involved with the production of the opening ceremony, he was involved with Torino, and he is Australian. I worked with him on the opening ceremonies in Barcelona in '92. With that background it just seemed logical after hearing about skaters with pyro, like Torino. Mac
Ellis
Hey folks, did anyone else spot the hot fallout in the arena from the pyros during the closing ceremony? Looks like un-spent stars reaching the ground! Did anyone else think that was bad?
