CharlieTAS
I am a AS year student and have had numerous chats with course advisors regarding choices for Uni, however they can only speak from there minimal knowledge and at that its mostly form an actors POV. I've been working in technical theatre for five years now from the age of 11 this is all due to my schools brilliant facilities, now the time for me to choose places and subjects etc has really arrised and I am really stuck in it. The 3 main places I am considering are Mountview, Guildhall, and Bristol old vic. I am deffinitely going to do lighting but courses are what I am not sure about, I have a vast amount of experince including outside school. So if anyone can give any advice on courses and routes to take please do so. Regards, Charlie. :) Moved to Training and Qualifications
marky
I would consider other routes as well as University. I'm not sure a degree specifically in Lighting is the best way to start a career in Lighting. I looked at the Uni's you are looking at and they all have good technical courses and if that route is the one for you, will give you a good grounding in lighting design and operation. I was fortunate enough to find a job with a Broadcaster who would provide industry training and real work experience, which I think is much more important than any degree, particularly in this sort of industry. If you do go to uni, make the most of every opportunity to work outside, as 'real' work experience is very much sought after. Speaking to people who are studying TV craft's at university in particular, I find they teach you one thing (arguable the text book way) but the reality is very different! Visit the Universities and see which course and which environment suits you best!
CharlieTAS
Cheers Marky and Stu for that matter, just the sort of thing I was looking to hear.
Tom R
Charlie are you looking specifically at theatre? And are you looking at sound and lighting or just lighting? There are many different routes to take depending on this...
Nick S
I would consider other routes as well as University. I chose going to University to study a "straight" subject (if you can call a music/visual studies degree a "proper" degree), whilst keeping up the tech experience and training (every major uni will have an active theatre programme), as well as carrying on employment with several venues. This obviously depends on what you want to do - I was extremey lucky to end up at a university that was attached to a major drama center, and an extensive network of contacts and alumni in the entertainment industries. It would be interesting to see whether someone in my situation would be more employable than someone who went to somewhere like the Old Vic (which is a good school - had I not wanted to get away from Bristol, I probably would have applied there) if both had similar amounts of actual work experience. w/robe
Charlie I must declare a vested interest here as I lecture at one of the institutions that you are considering . There are a number of discussions that have been held on TBR regarding training or work experience and I would agree with Marky that you should get as much experience as possible outside your educational establishment. I personally think that having a bit of paper that says you can study to BA Hons level is never going to hold you back, particularly if at some point in the future you decide to do something different. Unlike NickS I would recommend that, if you are going down the education route, you may as well study an area in which you want to work.
Matt567
So if anyone can give any advice on courses and routes to take please do so. :P Hi Charlie, Can I suggest you take a look at the National Council for Drama Training website as a starting point. Its quite a comprehensive site but can point you in the right direction. www.ncdt.co.uk If you go for the link below it will take you to the courses page; www.ncdt.co.uk/acourse.asp Hope this helps. Many thanks, Matt T [EDIT]Link made clickable
