picky
Hi first post so be nice to me! O/K I currently run a small PA about 5K consisting of Dynacord F cabs with a pair of twin 15 Peaveys as subs. Its O/K, but I want to get killer bass, preferably long throw on as cheaper budget as possible, (don't we all) anyway any advice on what to buy welcome. I have always liked Martin and thought about some SB115's but was not sure just how loud they are? Some friends of mine use Funktion1's with 3K across them and they just kill must be 130db? but never seen any come up for sale anywhere? Last question anybody know some good second hand dealers for this sort of thing please other than e-bay? Thanks for your help Phil :D

phil dekked
By "long throw" I presume you want something that works well outside? But do you want good small room performance as well?Start by looking for some true horn loaded boxes? Things like Void acoustics "Looney" bin are a true horn loaded 18" and are good at throwing a lot of bass, only downside is to get the low end extension ( down to 35-40hz) you`ll need ideally 4 a side ? They retail new around £750 a box ( I think!) If you want something a a bit cheaper Cerwin Vega t-36`s come up regularly on e-bay and they`re not bad for a cheap hornloaded box , again tho` they work best in pairs or quads? The F1 218 is a bandpass horn assisted bin which is a compromise between bandpass and horn loaded, they work well on their own but couple nicely in big stacks. The Turbo 718 was the predessor to the 218 and they come up for sale more often than the 218 and go for a lot less! The main difference between the 218 and 718 is the driver which Tony Andrews spent a lot of time changing the cone shape and weight to match the box .There was a set of 218`s up on e-bay last week...? Think they went for around £900 a box which seems about the private buyers s/hand price at the mo`. 718`s tend to go for around the £500-600 mark. hope that helps a bit .p. Rob_Beech
Hi Phil. the Martin Cab you suggest whilst being a good quality box and sound is probably not what you are looking for. Due to its design its not really classed as "long Throw". At times like this we have to ask ourselves "What is long throw anyway?" if you have a look around on here you'll findthat certain past threads go into detail about this and how the sound is thrown...or not as the case may be. You mention you like Martin cabs. Sticking with current production stuff for the time being you could try and get hyoldof a couple of WSX subs. they are big, heavy and not particularly cheap but a good sound and a horn loaded design making them very efficient and able to maintain uselable volumes at significant distances. You would really need to be looking at horn loaded designs. The suggestions made already are very good. As for frequency response as has been mentioned you'll struggle to get the bottom octave without multiple subs per side (4 or even more). If its just power you require it would depend on the room size and the type of music.the WSX are rather clean sounding, may not be what you require. The old W8S even more so although these are a hybrid design. Work very well. I still tour with them as a rule. Rob
