Chauvet Stage Wash 1550 for Cyc lighting

Hi there

My youth pastor's brother (also a pastor) has got some of the Chauvet Stage Wash 1550's for uplighting his cyc at his church. And he recommended them to us for our cyc. I'm not convinced- he says that the Chauvet has a hot spot, the blue is a UV blue, it uses dichroics so therefore the edges of the beam will suffer from colour fringing, the colour mixing won't be that great because the 3 lights are off centre from each other... the list goes on.

So does anyone have any real experience with them? I did a search but nothing useful came up.

I would much, much rather use the 'real thing'- cyc lights. Except that they are twice the price.

These are not something that we're looking at getting right away though.

Alternatively, if we were to buy them now, and upgrade to cyc lights in a year or so's time, would they still be useful? For the once-a-year tour that we do, in small venues with limited power? Or in our youth hall? Or to uplight/downlight fabric sails etc that sometimes get used as the backdrop?

Thanks... I think I've pretty much answered my own questions, but anything you can offer....

I don't have any experience with this item in particular, but my experience with Chauvet is you get what you pay for, and there's usually a reason their products are inexpensive.

And if you run all three lamps at full, you've got 1500w of incandescent heat inside this tiny package...seems a little scary to me.

I haven't used them but I did look into the specs for other Chauvet washes. From what I read you have to them a few metres from where you want the light to overcome some of the problems you mentioned. Using them on a Cyc would have them to close.

I am also in Auckland. Could you please tell me where you can buy these because I may look at them as general washes.

I would have thought that Cyc lights would have been cheaper then the total number of the Chauvets needed to cover the same area.

At www.mdrlighting.co.nz they talk about the stage wash 1500 being most effective at a miniumum distance of 25 to 30 feet from where you want the light.

Thanks

Brent
