Output Voltages

I need to provide an audio feed to a lighting controller for sound-to-light. The input on the lighting controller specifies "1 - 30v rms". Where's the best place to take the audio feed from, the mixer output or the power amp output ? I thought a line level output was around the 1v mark ( but could be wrong ! ) , but have never really considered what sort of voltage was present at the output of a power amp. Any thoughts ?

If you take the feed from the power amp output, you'll probably blow up the sound-to-light part of your LX desk.

You are correct that a line level output is approx 1v.

Take the audio feed from either the line outputs of the desk (main o/p) or an aux send.

AFAIK power amp voltages are anywhere from 70/100v upwards.

1-30V audio in for sound to light sounds like a disco light controller designed to plug into the speaker outputs of a 100W amp. Very common a few years ago.

Most folks think of line level as something like 775mv into 600R at 0dB, most aux sends and desk outs happily deliver in excess of +20, so this disco chaser should operate quite happily out of a spare aux or matrix out.
