feeta Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Wll the winter olympics opening ceremony is in full swing and what a show. Did anyone else see it? They must have had 500+ movers!!! They did some great stuff with the pyrotechnics too. Does anyone know how they would have made the gas(?) jets shoot up around the main circle chasing each other? Surely they would have had to have a sort of on/off switch on every jet (there were hundreads) to achieve the effect? What sort of console would be running the rig too? It would have had to be something immense to do that I would have thought. Anyone else have any thoughts on it? Pete :)
Rich newby Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Hi Guys,Watching the winter Olympics just now I saw the amazing firework show. I was just wondering who was in control? Oh and my favourite was the twist from the top of the arena. Cheers for the help Rich
JohnPartridge Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 Just as I was going to post the same thing :) I aggree the setup was impressive , but isnt that what you expect from an event watched by Billions.... The rig consisted of Mac2000 Wash's and what I believe to be Skycannons. Also spotted were LED Par64's and Pixellines. Control wise , I believe they would have used 2/3 large desks running different sections of the Arena. Pyrotechnics wise I would believe that it would be all controled from a computer , that way timings can be spot on. The most impressive thing for me were the 5 rings , how they were first lifted up/down for the trapease artists , but then spun round to create the 5 rings. Overall , good job , but like I said... isnt this what you expect... My £0.02 worth (for now) John Partridge
Rich newby Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I just made a topic about the pyro in the pyro section. Mods, you might want to merge topics! TOPICS MERGED
mackerr Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Does anyone know how they would have made the gas(?) jets shoot up around the main circle chasing each other? Surely they would have had to have a sort of on/off switch on every jet (there were hundreads) to achieve the effect?Yes they would have an individual electrically fired solonoid valve on each gas jet. This is old technology in performing arts that has been used in computer controlled water fountains for 25 years. What was up with that 80's music for the entrance of the athletes though? :) Mac
Robfl20 Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Mackerr has it spot on, we use this kind of flame, or "jet" effect along with water fountains all the time at work. It actually is not as tricky as you might think! For control we use a Whole Hog II, which is capable of controlling the lighting, gas jets, water fountains, pyro and other effects simultaneously (with a deadman for pyro safety).
timmath Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 From conversations I had with one of the console OP's a while ago there are a substantial quantity of new space cannon lamps on the rig, and unless things changed it was being controlled by 3 or 4 Hog 3's on a monstrous fibre network. The LD was Durham Marenghi. Regards Tim
Tomo Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I was greatly impressed by most of the show, but I have to admit one disappointment:The followspotting of the flame carriers was heinous - they ran out of the pool several times, it drifted off them a couple of times and the focus of the various beams varied massively - I saw many fuzzy edges with colour aberration next to perfect pin sharp pools. I'm fairly sure it was because they weren't using followspots much of the time, but faking it with moving heads - so you could take it as one example of why this isn't very good. Other than that - Beautiful!I loved the Olympic Rings trussing, and the pyro to light the flame was perfect.
AndrewR Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I'm still loving the people skating round the arena with flame shooting out of the tops of their heads! Environmentally friendly flames no less!
Mr.Si Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 I'm so gutted! I meant to set it recording on sky+ , but I forgot. I was out having a bad night of RC car racing, so if anyone has recorded it or knows if it's gonna be repeated at all, then I would most appreciate it. Si
TeeJay Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 There are a couple of snippets here though it won't play in the UK (or anywhere outside of NBC coverage) But the BBC has something here Don't know what it's like as I don't have broadband on the computer I'm currently at. Definitely would have preferred to be watching that rather than setting up the next band on the current season ...
LeeStoddart Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Excellent show. I saw up as far as the beginning of the teams last night (and then had to go out on taxi duty for my daughter) But I caught from the end of the teams entry onwards this morning on the BBCi. I loved the effects - fireworks were excellent and the lighting of the flame was certainly something else. Wouldn't it have been great if the Ferrari could have made five donuts!
Bobbsy Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I just got this: http://www.plsn.com/Newsroom/News/olympics-1 from a newsletter I subscribe to. It seems they used 4 Wholehog 3s to do the show. Bob
