Darkfire
Hello - brief intro as it is the first time I've posted here - I'm the Events Manager down at Plymouth University Students' Union - bit of a jack of all trades. Got a problem at the moment I have a room I need to put some lighting into for dance floor. Square room about 12m each side. DJ Box in the middle of one of the walls. I've got two Martin 812s in each of the two corners opposite to DJ box. I've got a data-moon on the speaker stackers in each corner of the wall the DJ box is in. I now want to put something above the DJ box to light the dance floor - (I can't fly anything above dancefloor). Now I have a budget of virtually nothing (£500-£1000) although hopefully in 6months I will be able to do a full proper rig but can't can't justify it it at the moment. I've been offered:4 x Genius Next Scanners 1 x Hi Tech 6 Controllerfor a grand - second hand, couple of years old but only seen 3 months use. I trying to decide if they would be better or worse than some of the ACME 'four packs' that are available in my budget.Examples here : http://www.djtrader.co.uk/spireleisure/en-...b/dept_119.html Keep thinking I should get DMX stuff so I can use it later when I get a rig and desk or just go very cheap and get half a dozen 'disposable' effects on sound to light. Or any other suggestions welcome. Cheers CHRIS
Matt
hey, I know a place where you can get some par 56 for cheap, though it might be a bit late, if you can purchase them now you should be fine... ... link: http://www.soundlightuk.com/september.html
peter
I think the question of whether to go for DMX or Sound to Light fixtures really depends on whether you have a DJ who can be bothered setting up lighting effects (or a Lighting Operator). If not, its a lot simpler to just connect a few Sound to Light fixtures (perhaps in a Master/Slave configuration, so you get syncronisation) and leave it at that. Check out Ebay - there are quite a few Futurescans or Goldenscans on there at the moment, although they might be slightly out of your budget. If you can't find anything else, a trip to Maplins will get you some very cheap but almost cheerful sound to light scanners for literally peanuts. (Mojo Spinmasters are £129 - you could get 8 for the price of your 4 Genius scanners)
Stu
Chris, Stage Electrics have got an auction coming up soon (Bristol I think) - perhaps you could request a cat from the website, and see whats on offer, and then go up and see if you can get a bargain! :o Stu
owen_mcauley
I've had a lot of fun playing around with the next scans, great little lights, used to use them for budget nightclub install, good light output, and as good as some higher priced scanners, I think they would be a good asset to get a hold of, especially for that price. If you want any more info on them, I'll dig out the product specs. Owen
Darkfire
Went with the Next Scanners in the end backed up with some really cheap <£100 lighting in some corners for a bit of general lighting. Scanners are prfetty sound but came without a manual - anyone know where we could get one on the net? Long shot I know but worth a try. Got the controller manual and that is fine just got some problems with the lights doing different things! Cheers CHRIS
