I have a few achievements in mind:

    1) Allowing for I/O connection of a Mac Mini running Q-Lab, minimising analogue ports being used

    2) Having a DSP between console and amplifiers, again to minimise the number of analogue ports being used

    3) Having all venue audio systems combined - Stage & Auditorium, FOH PA, Backstage PA and Show Relay, Digital Messaging System

This is all doable but will require quite a lot more kit than just the card. My primary advise would be to do Levels 1 & 2 and maybe 3 of the Dante Certification Program to properly understand what you'll be getting yourself into. It's a free online training course.

  2. I was in a small venue in the US in 2018 where their lighting control was some piece of software running on an Apple II. There used to be a web page about the software but I can't find it anymore. I didn't get to use it, unfortunately, as we were in a different space that used QLab for lighting control.

ETA: It might have been this but I could have sworn it was DMX not analog, maybe there were different versions!

So 60 sheets of paper took up 3 or possibly 4 pallets...

I once helped install some kind of machine tool many years ago, that arrived on a pallet as expected. Turned out there was a missing cable that was dispatched the next day. It, which was something like a D25-D25 about 50cm long, arrived in a jiffy bag carefully wrapped onto a pallet. Delivery driver didn't seem surprised and said it happens all the time.

I find SQ to be terrific value.  It's not the best mixer around, but it's clearly the best mixer at that price point.

The Soundcraft offerings are almost universally disliked over here.  The Midas and Presonus have their uses but are a Tier (or two..) below the SQ IMO.

The Digico S21 isn't in the same budget ballpark, is it?  I've always found the SQs to be significantly cheaper.  (Looking at my super secret price lists... S21 is close to 2x the price of an SQ6.)

When I bought in this space a few years back the SQ6 itself was about 2/3 the cost of a S21. If you added a stage box and Dante card the SQ, especially with the 48KHz boxes, worked out considerably less than half the price.

I didn't get on with the S21 when I tried it. I think it was mostly a personal preference in UI design thing so others will almost certainly disagree!

  5. I have no experience with it, but I did spot this budget option a while back. No idea if it's even vaguely usable or reliable. I'd rule it out as it's got built in rechargeable batteries, but as it apparently works "without battery or mains power" maybe that's not a problem. Who knew a radio mic manufacturer would be the ones to finally crack perpetual motion?

Is there a compact, as in 2 mic inputs 2 line outputs interface version of a DX168 for use with a Allen & Heath SQ-6 ? seems an waste to use a DX168 for a lecturn mic and a foldback speaker ?

It would be nice to get a digital DI box to do the job ?

Unless you've got a Dante card for it, the smallest box is the half rack space DX88-P which is 8in/8out but on phoenix connectors. If you've got a Dante card then there's no end of options but none with convenient preamp control on the mixer. If you can "put up with" 48KHz there is always the AR84 which is smaller cheaper but still bigger than you're looking for.

...and are occasionally on 'special offer' at £100 for 4...

As they are currently at Red 5 Audio I've never used them but might have a try for high risk situations. I inherited a RVD1 kick drum mic, that whilst not a miracle cheap replacement for the usual suspects, I really liked for some situations. No other experience.

After a couple of years of trouble free service (except for noisy openreach line problems) we had an email from plusnet saying they were going to pull out of the business market, and we had a year to find a new supplier. Cheers! :-/

I don't know if you're looking, or this is just of historical info. I highly recommend Zen Internet I've been with them for my home connection since 2007 and moved my work connection (from Plusnet whom we had no end of trouble with) in 2019. All FTTC products as it's all that's available in the area. I think that I've had exactly one problem in 16 years at home that was not Openreach planned maintenance/outage. Work connection has been pretty much flawless. The one time I did have an outage, support was excellent  and I got straight through to someone who actually knew exactly what to do. It was long enough ago that I can't remember the details of.

And of course, if anyone wants a referral link for a £25 gift card when signing up..............

  9. Whilst we’re not in an area that is listed as changing over to fibre anytime soon, we as a theatre have already had to move some services. Our Redcare burglar alarm service was ended so had to move to IP/Mobile. Our phone system was provided via ISDN which we were warned was by BT/Openreach would be switch off “within the next 2 years” about 4 years ago, but still hasn’t! So we switched to VOIP.

I’m concerned about the loss of service aspect. We’ve still got a working analogue phone line, for the moment, but loss of internet would mean the end of pretty much all business systems, Box Office, finance, membership, incoming telephones and more. I’m currently looking at backup options be it 4/5g or Starlink, but they’re relatively expensive options to backup an internet connection that has gone down for maybe 5 minutes in the last 5 or so years. Another option is to look into tethering a phone to the internet router, as I usually have a decent amount of data left every month, and limiting network use to just the low bandwidth business systems for the duration of the main connection outage.

It’s a real concern that I think we’re only just waking up to. The other aspect from a residential point of view is that these modern VoIP phones need power, so in a power cut?

  10. Agree with all that said above, especially the points on angles and blocking. Also remember that if your walls are semi transparent, with front projection, the projection will also go through and show up on whatever is behind. This can give double images. With rear projection on semi transparent you'll have the be careful that the audience cannot see the projector lens, or they will see a hotspot especially in blackouts unless you've got a shutter or control the output of the projector.

We did a show a few years back that had a similar effect that was simply projected at a fairly sharp downwards angle, careful blocking and accepting we couldn't project to the floor made it work.

  11. I've got a couple of NetPixel ONEs from smart show that have been great. 32 universes of ArtNET to 8 outputs. They don't appear to have anything available, but might be worth contacting as the were very keenly priced.

You might be better off with something like this...

    http://www.db-audioware.com/dmxis-lighting-controller

I always thought dmxis was a good idea, and own it myself, but alas Enttec no longer make the hardware for it, which the software was tied to. https://www.dmxis.com/dmxis/

It's replacement is Show Buddy Active that also has a VST/Audio unit plugin, and can also handle video playback. I've never used it however!

I'm keen to go for option 1, however I've noticed in the past these demuxes can sometimes spit out a 'blip' of all channels @100% when powering up, and I've known this cause nuisance tripping of dimmer racks in the past.  Has anyone else experienced this, or am I likely to get away with it?  I think the rack in question is actually on a distribution circuit with fuse protection, rather than breakers, however I'd be interested to know what experience others have had with this kind of setup.

I did it once, many (~17?) years ago, and seem to remember that issue. Yes I remember an issue with the Multiexchanger in -10v mode where it would snap every channel to full briefly on start up. The natural flow of the venue was to power the dimmers on before the desk. This may be a non issue in this specific case, we had the issue that the supply breakers to the dimmers could not take the inrush of basically every channel fully loaded (among all sorts of other issues that we couldn't get sorted!). We had to ensure the Multiexchanger was powered up before the dimmers. I think we tried having them power up together and seem to remember that reducing this happening to about a 50% random occurrence. This was with 2x24 channel Permus racks.

That was a long time ago, and I think it was the Botex version of the Multiexchanger, so it's possible that that issue has been fixed by now, but doubt it's changed.

  14. Not 100% sure, but I think that's a Thomas 4 Cell Flood, only picture I can quickly find is here the yoke style is definitely reminiscent of other Thomas products I've used. Nocturns were a Strand lantern that I don't remember being available in a multi cell unit.

I think that's actually a 143 not a 145. Same body shape as a Patt 50, but opening back and a fresnel lens. Never seen one of those before!

Yes you're right I miss read the name plate.

Warwick could be a goer if you do have it.
As for 'safe to use' if needed, there are a couple of sparkies this end who could, if needed, make it so with a little work... 🙂

Ah alas no Patt 50, but I do have a Patt 145 if it's of any use, my memory was playing up! The safety issue is that there is, I presume, a small circular guard on the back that allows access to the wiring. Has a lamp but is untested.

Looks like I'll be good for one from Mike, as he's nearby.

I suspect the carriage from Surrey would be a bit OTT, sadly for another, but thanks for the offer.

I THINK I have a Patt 50 in Warwick, I'll check tomorrow. If I remember right it works and has a working lamp, may need to work out if it's safe however!

I find the visiting dance teachers tend to come in with their combie regardless of what system is installed.

Speaking as someone who has provided for/managed something close to dance teachers in random "venues to hire", I always made sure they had a backup if they needed music. I lost count of the times in the school hall/church hall/community centre/town hall/"professional venue" second space/etc. that the installed system wasn't working/ nobody had the keys/ you're not allowed to (by the caretaker)/someone had fiddled with it/the power switch was in an in use meeting room... The upshot was that it was far easier, consistent, and reliable for those teachers to use their own system.

Similar problem to OP. Cant find any vocal beltpacks.   Does anyone know if the line6 Relay beltpacks BP12 can be used with a microphone input rather than an instrument (Both use the same taf4 plug)

Yes according to this page TBP12 is the pack used for XD-V75 and various Relay models.
