If you open the box at home, connect the receiver to an amp of some kind and speak into the mic with the transmitter close to the receiver - do you get crystal clear audio that is stable and trouble free

I tested it before I took it to site and was a little concerned, however, site was only a couple of miles away and I decided to try it in situ.

I am used to testing radio mics in my (SmalI) workshop and accept that gain before feedback is low because of the proximity of mic to loudspeaker but the feedback experienced on this occasion was different to normal.

I have arranged a return. I will do a bit more testing to make sure I am not missing anything. but at present don't have confidence in the unit.

  2. Does anyone have experience of using these?

I purchased one  (without a mic) for installation in a church to replace a faulty TOA system, I have used many of the basic Trantec systems over the years starting with the S2000, S3600 and S4.04 from a couple of years ago and they have always performed well for the price for speech apart from an earlier variant of the S4.04 (I think) also sold as a Sennheiser Freeport which put a click onto the system when powered up with the mic channel open (As happens with small non operated 100V line speech systems)

This unit seems to be a dog, I tried it first in my workshop and experienced a type of feedback like I had never heard before, I had never used the type of capsule that I was using with it before and tried others but the system still seemed unstable despite adjusting input gain, ouput gain, volume of loudpeaker etc.  My workshop is small, I took it to my local church and tried it there and then took it to site a few miles away. Whilst things were better in the intended church I still felt it was not stable and decided I could not leave it with them. It felt like there was an issue with some automatic gain, or compander circuitry.

Has anyone else experienced this with these units? The ones I bought most recently (A couple of years ago) prior to this were fine, Is this is a revised version does anyone know?

As there seems to be supply problems with the Trantec units a JTS system E-6+E-6TB+CM-501 CH70 was suggested as a replacement.  Has anyone used these?

Main requirements are reliability, reliability of reception, speech clarity and absence of click when switched on and off  with channel open, 50 M line of site range (Although in fact maximum distance TX to RX is cc 15m).

  3. In 50years I rarely come across Pin 1 taken to chassis of the plug and have never done it. The only time I could see it might be advantageous is if the connectors were adjacent to something unscreened kicking out a lot of electrical or higher frequency interference.

  4. Following on, even if the cable is balanced mic (Not DMX etc.) The input to the speaker needs to be balanced as well.

If it is balanced at both ends, is there an earth lift switch on the speaker? Have you tried that in both positions?

Does the cable run adjacent to lighting cable, if it does move it well away.

If that doesn't do anything you  could try replacing it with quad cable.

P.S. The mic, being dynamic might be picking interference directly if it is adjacent to dimmer cables or lights. If everything is on the same phase it may be mains carried.

  5. Hi,

Does anyone have a list giving frequency against numbers on the dial of the multi position rotary switches used to set the freqency please?
I have downloaded a copy of the manual and searched on line but not come up with anything.

I have a TX passed to me for repair as non functioning, the RX is still on site some way away. I am sure I have tested this unit before using my Sennheiser UHF receivers but am not get anything from it. It may be I am not finding the right frequency. The actual lavalier mic is working although in need of replacement, it has been repaired that many times. I am suspecting a TX fault.

Does anyone know what the spec of the DC connector to the RX is please?  I.e diameter of socket and central pin.

I do a lot of this type of work in lecture theatres. HDBaseT is cheapest - I'd recommend shielded Cat cable as a minimum. We use the Extron DTP system mostly with their cable and connectors but your budget may not go that far?

We've tried optical fibre cables from Extron and Kramer. Mostly good things about the Extron if over 15m (a lot of failures on the 15m and 10m versions) and lots of failures on the Kramer (their plenum series with the mini HDMI connectors to run easily and then use a plug-on adapter - they're a nightmare).

SDI is ok but if budget isn't an issue I'd go AVoIP for future proofing. Expensive converters (costs are coming down slowly though) but cabling is cheap as you like and any future expansion is as easy as adding another receiver on the network - make the tie - job done.

Sorry buried my head in the sand again and now feeing better.  By AvoIP do you mean HDBaseT or yet another protocol?

What I would like to achieve is a system whereby I can distribute to 4 monitors at the front of the church (2 Monitors for the choir and two main monitors for the congregation), 1 at the rear balcony as a comfort monitor and a projector mounted on the side wall as per diagram. Ideally I would like to run one cable for the 4  front monitors and split them locally although conceivably it might nice if it was relatively easy to add a second cable so the choir monitors could receive a separate signal.  It is one of the reasons I thought of SDI first as I believe it is possible to daisy chain?

  7. Both fair comments. I don't think there is an hour meter, just an end of life indicator. It is only used foor 3 or 4 hours a week. Having said that it was installed a few years ago and its history prior to that is unknown.

We are looking to go to a TV based system although I would still want a projector as a back up.

I am out of touch with projectors now. What make and model would people suggest as an equivalent to look at? It must have horizontal keystone correction but I am happy to check the spec. of any suggested.

I am considering getting the projector down and havng a look at it with the provison that it may need replacing. There was  a lot of work done in the church it is installed (By me) in so I am mindful it needs a full clean.

pmiller056 is the service manual you have for ths model or a similar? I have a service manual for PLc XU50 but have not looked other than in Manuals Library for 51 service manual.

  8. I am doing battle with a Sanyo PLC-XU51 Projector. Is anyone familiiar with them? I know it is getting on a bit.  I do not remember specifically having to save settings when closing the MENU, but it seems the projector is forgetting them when it is switched off. Does anyone know if it has a memory battery? It is bracket mounted quite high up and will be a pain to get down, I am reluctant to do it in case it fails completely. There is not a back up.

  9. Are they "Special" SDI 75 Ohms connectors or standard 75 Ohm connector at an additional price?

I have done a forum search and tried to follow the link to the Blue Room Wiki to no avail (Reported).

CPC sell VDC SDI cable but don't seem to list DVI BNC connectors or crimp tools.

Are the 4 outputs needing separate switching/mixing - if so you want a video router. If not you just want a vision mixer and a video distribution amplifier.

Thanks for that, that was my original intention but I think it may be unecessarily complex to have 3 or 4 outputs at present and suspect it would be very rarely used. What I may consider is wiiring 3 maybe 4 separate feeds but putting front end gear in for simple mixing/switching and a distro amp for the time being.

I also question whether we need audio mixing (At present at least) but suspect that most vision mixers come with basic audio mixing as standard.

Smaller generators are often 'floating' where there is no reference between their live and neutral terminals and the generator's chassis or true earth.

Therefore the rcd doesn't have any reference to measure leakage.

A floating output could be considered as both 'live' terminals with a potential difference between them, but not to ground.

Useage will determine whether a floating supply or one referenced to ground is best (from a gen as opposed to the grid), I'm not clued-up enough to comment on which is best for what!

Yes I am aware of that, in the case of my generator, voltage of L1 and L2 with respect to the earth pin of the socket is about 120V, 240V between L1 and L2. My intention was to point out that an RCD may not offer additional protection with small generators. Deeper knowledge and discussion to be had in the Electical and Power sub forum.

  12. My small cheap (2Kw) generator does not have  any connection between earth and neutral. Some years ago I carried out an experiment to see whether a plug in RCD would offer any extra protection in conjunction with my RCD tester. It would not trip (And was not faulty)

  13. Following on from my previous thread on video distribution we will need some form of switching/mixing. Some economical suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe 4 inputs and 2 to 4 outputs although single may be acceptable.

Ideally it would need to be able to accept input from HDMI, Camera (No camera as yet so format not known, and possibly VGA (Maybe accomplished by a VGA to HDMI converter), should we be considering other formats?

I would also like to have preview of the inputs and maybe a frame store but it does need to be simple as ther are no other technical people at the church.

Maybe something like this Roland ROL-V-1HD+?

Yes, however the 70m tag is a little hopeful, there are several versions, I think 4, in the range and it's worth getting a 'size' bigger than expected.

For cat5 expect 1/3 and cat5E 1/2 of that didstance.

Longest run is 30m. When you refer to Cat 5 or 5E are you referring to grade of cable? I am happy to use Cat 6 or 7 cable if that will make a difference if the price difference isn't too much.
