Wireless video

Well had a search in the forum but the latest thread is from 2013. We have wireless sound(microphones), we have wireless DMX. Where are we at show reliable and reasonably priced wireless video transfer devices with low latency.

We travel around the country with our show and most of the small spaces doesn’t have any cat5/sdi or anything running from the booth to stage. It would be really handy to have one with us.

Any suggestions?

Although your measurement of reliable may vary with the teradek kit. I'd never use it for anything show critical.

Being very aware that anything that sends digitally has latency, so make sure that audio and video get the same latency if any lip sync is needed.. For small venues consider a length of cat 5 cable as a single or short life item.

It's much easier to get a ~0.125MHz channel to cut through the noise in a less crowded bit of spectrum, than it is a 20 or 40MHz wide channel in very crowded spectrum.

 

I have used teradek extensively, I wouldn't choose to rely on them, or anything unlicensed, for any show critical application.

See also Kramer KW-14. I don't know who actually makes it (I suspect not either of them, as it's not their usual form factor).

Wireless video is typically either compressed or needs high bandwidth, so not ideal. Audio and DMX tend to need lower bandwidth, so it’s easier to make more robust solutions.

 

I would not trust any wireless devices with show critical video feeds. Yes a 3rd or 4th camera feed, but not the main feed to my screen.

 

Personally I’d stick with a bit of copper from A to B, whether that’s CATx with adaptors or SDI. More reliable, easier to trouble shoot and can be sourced fairly easily if there are issues.

Are you wanting to send a live video feed or play back from a pre recorded Source? If it is the latter place the Source close to the Display and control the Source from a distance - may even be simpler to bring the audio back to you over a wireless connection?
