Mic clip on M10 studding

A M10 lock nut (as in a half nut, not a nyloc) will fit onto 3/8 mic stand thread. With a full sized nut you get about two turns before it seizes.

If you could cut some 3/8 studding, could you get two turns and a bit of Loctite into an M10 connecting nut, and would that be presentable enough for your application?

Though if you can get 3/8 studding you could just drop on that.

I remember assisting hanging some Meyer UPMs years ago, available with M10 hanging points for EU market and 3/8 for American - asked time and time again and confirmed they were the M10 variant, turned up to hang them and were they bugger.

Maybe look at some car part suppliers? This one popped up for me:

Brass Union 3/8 unf Male to M10 x 1 Female

Don’t think unf is compatible with bsw, a few years back I was trying to find the correct bolt for mics and also cameras to attach them to things and I tried most things before getting the correct tread.

I think 3/8 UNC should fit microphone, I think it's 3/8 UNC for the small one and 5/8 UNF for the large one. UNC being coarse 3/8-16 and 3/8 UNF 3/8-24 teeth per Inch.

3/8 UNC and Whitworth are both 16TPI but I don't think that's true of all diameters.

There's coarse and fine for the metric threads as well.

In automotive threads often have the wrong sized head, like an M10 with a 16mm or 15mm across flats head, for reasons I can never understand - there's usually space for a proper one.

There's good news and bad news...

and this is a funny thing but also has the right threads on

The mic threads should be BSW if 3/8", although there are an increasing number being made as UNC. Think it derives from camera tripod mounts which are either 1/4" or 3/8" Whitworth. For the short length of thread engagement and low torque in this application they're essentially interchangeable. The thread angles are 5 degrees different (55° BSW and 60° UNC). Thread pitch is the same for all common sizes except 1/2".

Let's get back to basics. What are you trying to do?

We all seem to forget these are all standard threads and products when doing something slightly out of the ordinary.

When we wanted a camera mounted from a hook clamp on a lighting bar the 'boffins' went through all sorts of catalogues looking for the metric/imperial adapters etc.

I googled for 1/4" BSW studding and the selection appeared before me, I ordered a 1m length and a bag of 10 nuts;Camera end was screwed into the camera and a lock nut,Hook clamp end was nut, washer, hook clamp, washer, nut and on the end we added lock nut.

For many years our short table mic stands were a disc of 3/8"-1/2" steel plate drilled and tapped at 1/4" BSW in the school workshop, I'm pretty sure it was BSW but from 50 years back I could easily be wrong . A length of studding screwed in with shellac to lock it, piece of ali tube slipped over to make it look pretty and a 1/4" to 1/2" screwed atop with shellac and painted Hammerite black.

yes that early 1/2" seemed to be the standard before the American 5/8" seemed to drift in.

These days I'd more likely go for 3/8" BSW or 5/16" UNC depending on your current standard.

One of these if the mic clips have removable 5/8" > 3/8" thread reducing inserts

With an M10 inner thread instead of 3/8, that's very useful. This surely is the neatest & cheapest way.

Yes it seems to be the obvious choice but I wouldn't like to see the reaction when someone is putting one of those on a stand 30 sec before needed. Which is why My strand lights have been drilled and tapped for M10 now. Edited by sunray

Many thanks for all the suggestions. Lot's of options.

The M10 to 5/8" and 5/8" to 3/8" adaptors, looks to be the best option for us (certainly the cheapest).

I'm also mounting some IR radiators with a ball head and these only have 3/8"

I was just surprised not to find a one piece off the shelf solution.
