Using PC type headsets on Clearcom

Recommended Posts

Hi all, does anyone have a fairly simple way to interface single earmuff with mic headsets wired with twin PC type 3.5mm plugs to a clearcom 4 pin neutrik type connector?

I can see the pinouts - but I'm assuming there needs to be some sort of impedance matching or power injection?

The cost and the subsequent shocking state of the headsets here drives us towards keeping our own headsets and plugging into the theatre talkback.

Your thoughts would be most welcome.

Thanks

Ian

PC headsets usually (always) use electret mics. I assume Clearcom, like other cooms systems, use 200R dynamic mics, so you will need to find a way to power the mic capsule. These headsets are also very flimsy compared with the real thing. It might be worth looking at language lab headsets (if they still exist).

There are some cheap (£33) headsets on ebay pre-wired for tecpro / clearcom. No personal experience of this particular one, but I have done a lot of bodgery with comms and they tend to work with most things.

e.g.

Is it actually clearcom or are you just using that as a generic term? We used to have some Metro Audio (now Stonewood) comms packs which did feed power down the mic line, seemed to work with either electret or dynamic mics.

Also, if you have never cut and resoldered headphone wires before, beware because they tend to be "tinsel" flex which is enamelled and really hard to solder. So adding those XLR4's may not be as easy as you think.

Those look identical to this:

Plus £1 or so for a cheap 4 pin XLR.

I've made some up recently, was a bit of a fiddle but the wire isn't too bad - certainly easier than some of the radio mic headsets I've had to reterminate in the past.

Thanks all - good points there - yes I had tried many years ago to wire a telecoms headset and found out first hand that those tinsel cables are almost impossible to resolder, so in this attempt I had made an adaptor patch cord.

After looking at how to power the mic, as a rough prototype attempt with wagos to see how bad it would be I use wired the mic to pins 1 and 2 and headset to 3 and 4, and it works!

So I'm looking at making a neater job now in version 2 - but thanks to everyone for the guidance - I'll certain be looking at those ebay ones as well as they are already wired.

Tim I was saying Clearcom, but you're right I was using it as a generic type, these are a RTS version here in HK

Cheers

Ian

I did a batch of these a little while ago and found them ok compared to other cables.

I have reterminated two different batches of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Headphones-with-Mic-for-PS4-Sony-Play-Station-4-PC-Stereo-Wired-Gaming-Headsets/254239978256?hash=item3b31e23310:g:F1AAAOSw4E1a0iuy and found the cable on the first batch quite easy but the second batch was very hard.
