  1. Thanks for all the responses. I did mean to say XLR not din and the desk is a Chauvet Stage designer 50. there is a 120ohm resistor in t last LED but nothing added on the dimmer racks. I don’t know if there is one internally. all I can say is - it works , but is that a good enough comment to continually using it.
  2. I have been using a Chauvet Obey 50 to control some Par 56 LEDs. There is a 3 pin din output and a 5 pin din output. I have been using the 3 pin. I have some 500w spotlights that are controlled by a DMX dimmer desktop and dimmer racks. I have found that I can plug the 5 pin din into the Obey and it controls the older spotlights. Can anyone comment on if this is an acceptable way of doing it. And if so should I use an end of line resistor at the dimmer racks end as well as on last led. Thanks
  3. I thought I would look back and see if there were any more posts to my original question. Is there a way to be notified of other posts to an original question? It seems to have started quite a discussion!!! We have 8x400w tungaten haologen and 8x 500w Fresnels and PCs FOH. The are controlled by 2 x6way Anytronics dimmer racks and a 2 preset 12 way desk controller. In recent years I have added some PAR 56 RGB floods controlled by a Chauvet Stage Designer 50 memory DMX controller. The next production I will controll all lights by this board. Going back to the continued discussion-I wouldn't dream of trying to control an LED lamp with a stage dimmer- somehow there seems to be difficulty with compatability with LEDs and dimmers. I would only use DMX. We have spares for all our fittings and so for the time being we will carry on as we are. You can still buy old GLS lamps on ebay so I suspect there will be spares available for a long time.
  4. Sorry, I should have made it clear-it is the acting area. Not sure whether that is stage up or down. Thanks for the comments so far.
  5. I look after the lighting in a small village hall. The rear of the stage is light by 500w halogen floodlights, the same as are used on domestic security lights. We are slowly changing spotlights to LEDs, but anyone suggest an LED equivalent of the floodlights
  6. In response to Gotty's original post, I am having a similar problem. I posted on here a while ago about purchasing a basic DMX controller for a few Par 56 LEDs. I bought a Chauvet Stage Designer 50 from Gear4Music. I tried it briefly as you can return within 30 days if not satisfied and was successful setting up one scene.I am now getting down to some serious programming and am awful problems with 'looks', 'scenes', 'chases' and 'pages'. I thought I had sorted out the terms but I was wrong. Of course I have 2 normal problems-the instructions are poor and in my case I am old!!! (It is now almost 60 years since I did my first stage lighting). I am sorry I am rambling on, but to get back to the original point, I cannot find a way in the Chauvet of including the fades in the programming but they can be done on playback. I think you can reassign channels as one of the contributors asked.I would also be grateful for any help with more detailed instructions for the Chauvet 50.
  7. Thanks for all the replies.I think I will do as 'Jivemaster' says and use the 'proper' cables when we expand.. I will also put a 120 ohm resistor at the end of the change as has been suggested elsewhere. My first improvement was to get a budget DMX controller such as a Chauvet 70 or Behringer 2412. Has anyone any comments on these? I understand the basic DMX OK but the programming seems to be quite difficult. Cheers

    DMX cables

A few years ago I installed 6no Par56 LED lights and a small DMX controller in a village hall. I used audio screened cable with 3 pin XLR connectors. I have since read that I should have used lighting type cable for the job. Will it matter?
