pritch
We have a fire door with a magnetic retainer on it - the casing has been damaged, and although it's not urgent we'd like to replace it. If I go to Screwfix, I can do the job for £25. If we get our alarm company to do it, they'll charge four bajillion pounds. Who would be classed as competent to do the work? It's a like-for-like replacement with a functionally identical part so it's not a change to the way the system operates.
kerry davies
As someone who was employed at one time to install fire alarm kit with absolutely no training beyond basic industrial electrician qualifications then if you are competent to change an electrical socket safely, I would foresee no problems. That does not mean I give you my permission, only you know your own levels of competence.
Junior8
Kerry is right. My only additional caveat is that I personally would have nothing to do with work on a fire door no matter how competent I felt. Sometimes you have to pay what a business wants to at least pass the responsibility onto someone else.Twenty years ago however I would have been much more gung ho! Jivemaster
Here's my take- Is your usual alarm company prepared to certify that their work and component meets the certified requirements of the complete and approved system? If so get them to do it, if not DIY. the screws, plaster and paint could cost more than the magnet unless you can get an OEM replacement.
