Wireless router

Good evening,

I have some work coming up using a QU-32. Can anyone advise on using a wireless router with the desk for the QU-pad app. Can I use any old router? I have a sky hub that I thought I could use?

Thanks in advance.

Slight aside, but on the subject of using WiFi with digital mixers, there is a set of short YouTube videos here that are worth a watch/listen. This set are centred around the X-Air mixers but the comments are applicable in general to all WiFi-enabled digital mixers. Worth 5 minutes to pick up a few pitfalls and tips.

Part 1: general WiFi strategy:

Part 2: Why iPads might not reconnect, 2.4GHz vs 5GHz, using an external router:

Part 3: Troubleshooting (more X-Air specific, but again general principles would apply with other brands):

Part 4: Closing remarks/conclusions/how we got here:

It might influence whether you use your Sky Router or not.

I've always been happy to throw any old router on a digital mixer.

That said, if you've never done any basic networking or IT, you might find things a bit more hit and miss.

I have found that sticking to 5GHz or having a router that does both is usefull.

I use the Airport Extreme with my QU-24, not sure on which gen it is (the flatter square one).

I used to use a Zyxel and had all sorts of issues with droupouts when the venues get busy. I have had no frequent dropout issues yet from the Airport.

The QU forums on Allen and Heath's website may be of use, that is where I got the recommendation for the Airport from.

Hi

Just be wary of using things like Sky Hubs (and BT Home Broadband, etc) DSL Routers because they quite often create issues; be it with their firewalls deciding that your mixer is trying to DDoS your network or blocking ports that you need, and the dumbed-down web interface won't let you configure options that you'll need, like port forwarding and static routes.

I had a BT hub that flat refused to work with my MA Node, despite telling it to turn off its firewall and opening all the ports, it still wouldn't let any MA-Net or Artnet traffic through it.

Home Hubs are usually hard-configured with the options that will work for 99.9% of the average user.

I prefer to use TP-Link gear for WiFi stuff and I've never had a problem.

All the best

Timmeh

Quick observation on this, I use the Airport Express on QU and Airport Extreme on my Ilive due to the faff of setting up static IP's with Ilive. I found that the Express has a much better range than the extreme. Also once either router is set up and working with your desk avoid like the plague apple's advice to upgrade the software!
