German Performance Tests

about 200 years ago (or August) german scientists conducted a series of tests to track infection in performance environments - the results came out today and you can read the summery here https://www.dropbox.com/s/4pe919005gwcmtg/20201029_Results_RESTART19_English-1.pdf?dl=0

TLDR - one way, distancing, cleaning, masks, ventilation takes infection risk to the "low to very low" category.

Seems to line up with the emphasis on ventilation to avoid re-breathing air in Germany:

Don't forget your winter coat!

You can have a system signed off as perfect but still the politicians change the rules hourly.

Also local councils still have the power to cancel an event, irrespective of what central government are doing.

I know one Drive-In event near us which appeared to have been meticulously planned, all approved and then the council got cold feet at the last minute. Event cancelled, promoter well out of pocket.

Many councils seem unwilling to let anything happen - possibly worried about liability falling on them if they permit something that turns into a super spreader. It might be that approvals need to be handled centrally, or at least the covid-related parts of a plan.

The big problem is in that one highlighted word above - "Distancimg"

And it always will be the big problem for venues and promoters.

I've seen various ads for events that are taking place at this time - but they are all either scaling down the on-stage action (and that includes scenery and lighting needs) to the point where reduced punters MIGHT cover the costs, or they're fortunate enough to get some sort of funding or sponsorship to cover the empty seats.

Let's face it - we're not going to be anywhere near workable options until we can get a LOT closer to filling more than 30% of seats...

We are going nowhere with research on how to make our business work until we sort out how to make any business work that needs groups of people to gather together. This morning's news is that Westminster is going to announce another national lockdown. I strongly suspect that lockdown is the only way to protect the NHS, another gathering together of people, and is not the last time this winter we shall see total lockdown.

As my nephews new employer said the one and only time they met; "See you when the vaccine works."

The governments of the world are just toying with the regulations til the virus goes away, which could be natural with herd immunity or with vaccine assistance.

With all the regulation it's amazing how similar the UK figures are to the Swedish figures per capita, which goes to show how effective the legislators are. BUT in Sweden businesses still exist.

Oh I'm under no illusions that this is some sort of rubber bullet and know exactly how flakey local authorities can be - we've had circus's cancelled AFTER BUILDING UP because the council deemed it unsafe despite numerous previous inspections and zero transmissions.

But it's always nice/useful when proper scientists come up with proper data; we might not be able to make use of it today but it's one more document we can wave at councils making license decisions about next year's shows and festivals and it might just be enough to tip the balance.
