    12.30pm January 14th 2009.

Starting at 1851 Gallery, Waverley Building.

In three acts; Recreating the effects from ‘The Flying Dutchman’, Hawthorn Theatricals installation of the new grid, and Dressing Shakespeare.

The 1958 production of ‘The Flying Dutchman’ at Sadler’s Wells, was one of the iconic uses of theatrical FX projection. Shane Guy’s installation (which runs for ~15 minutes) aims to recreate all the effects from the initial storm, the arrival of the Dutchman’s ship and the finale. This uses seventeen projectors with a range of effect units, many currently unavailable including the chromatrope, waves and hand operated lightning.
Following the piece there will be the opportunity for questions on the recreation, the equipment, and the wider research project which is exploring traditional effects projection and attempting to catalogue as much of the British past inventory, of equipment, as possible.

There will also be a display of other effect projection equipment and other oddities acquired as part of the work.

Hawthorn Theatrical have recently upgraded the grid from a static grid to a motorised system. This had a number of challenges due to the nature of the building including the ‘experimental’ roof structure.
Nick Key from Hawthorns will talk about and demo the installation.

    Dressing Shakespeare

This exhibition was conceived as part of the Society of British Theatre Designers' Collaborators exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. It has been mounted at Nottingham Trent University to celebrate the inauguration of theatre designer and dress historian Jenny Tiramani as Visiting Professor of Costume.

This compelling exhibition provides a window into the world of real Jacobean clothing. It includes three realised costumes designed by Jenny for the world-renowned Globe Theatre in London; original 17th century clothing artefacts and fascinating glimpses into the elaborate process of dressing the actors.

Non ABTT members welcome but please contact [email protected] so we have some idea of numbers.
