Review
An old book (1975) but it was the first book I ever read about theatre crafts. Sections include rostra, flats, designing, painting, props, armour, costume, make-up, masks and lighting. Although very out-of-date, the construction sections are still highly useful (particularly for scenery and props) - and that in itself makes this a great book if you can track down a decent copy. The hand drawings are plentiful and useful for explanation, but a little quaint! Unfortunately the one section that doesn't stand up to time is the lighting section, although it does provide a nostalgia trip! ('New' technology is a Strand STM dimmer) And, common sense should prevail when reading how to make a home-made dimmer or lantern! Whilst it's lacking a newer edition and references to Health & Safety (let's not build our own grid from Dexion!), I still recommend the book. - PDD
