> Disk Jockey

Disk Jockey is a term used to describe a person who plays recordings. This may be on a radio station, although now more commonly called 'Presenters' or in an environment such as a night club, coffee bar (anyone admit to remembering these?) or function (weddings, etc).

In a radio station these people were initially just continuity announcers who handled links between programs (working in small studios called 'Continuity's); or were technicians who played the records while 'real presenters' did the links (BBC anyone). With the advent of the pirate radio stations in the 1960's, came the early radio disc jockeys who did the whole job.

On the party circuit many mobile disc jockeys were referred to a a 'Dave Double-Decks' from the portable console comprising twin turntables and mixer, in a single case.

Many current disc jockeys either work the club circuit, in which case they will still mainly use vinyl records, or the party circuit, in which case they will mainly use CD's; although there are some who use both due to their large collections of 1980's and earlier recordings which are still on vinyl.
