A Channel on a lighting desk is a control node which can be adjusted using faders (live style desks), or set to a level using a numeric keypad (theatre style desks). Memory desks can store and recall sets of channel information (cues or submasters). A desk channel can often be patched to multiple DMX channels.

Hence it is possible that a single desk channel could be controlling a potentially unlimited number of lanterns, and it is important to use consistent terminology in communications and paperwork to distinguish between:
