> Compressor

An Audio Compressor is a device which is used to reduce the dynamic range of a signal. This may be used for technical reasons, such as to prevent a recording exceeding the maximum level and distorting; or for artistic reasons, such as to match the range of a voice to the range of the backing instruments.

A compressor may be basic on operation with few controls, or be provided with a full selection of controls which then allow the operator to set up the operation in detail. The controls which are commonly found on a compressor are:-

Control Usage
Threshold The signal level at which the compressor starts to alter the signal level output from the device.
Ratio By how much the output signal increase is reduced as the iput signal increases.
Attack How fast the compressor responds to an increase in input signal.
Release How fast the compressor responds to a reduction in input signal
