The circuit protective conductor (CPC), protective conductor or protective earth (PE) is a conductor provided for safety. In the majority of installations these terms are synonymous.

The PE is often referred to simply as the earth conductor however this also covers signal earths such as the shield of audio cables which must not be used for protection against electric shock.
