Full Version: Mackie SRM 450 as back up equipment

Hi everybody. I'm gonna start a new gig in a mid size club for an audience of 500 people. I use only a couple of Jbl's Sr 4733 ( 2x15x2" ) and a couple of sub woofers Jbl Sp 128 ( 2x18" 2242 inside ). I'm not confident at all with the Sr's specially cus it's gonna be driven by a Phonic amp (1100+1100 ) so I decided to buy some self powered speakers just incase some of them dies in the middle of the night.

Do you think that the Mackie SRM 450 would help in that situation? Will that help also as a backfill speaker? Would you recommend me to mix both systems to get more power or at least better distribution of sound?

Thank you very much.

Bad Rock,

The JBLs and subs will be a pretty stonkin' system IF you drive it with decent amps. (4733 will play horrendously loud, especially if you have subs and set crossover freqs appropriately. If you're relying on the Phonics for Mid-tops and subs, it may be prudent to dry-hire a truly "pro" amp as a standby. Shouldn't cost you too much and you'll have peace of mind.

It really depends on the gig, type of music, who's driving the system etc. etc. but if it's a DJ then definitely have another amp backstage.

Personally I don't see the merit in paying out to buy SRM450s (great as they are). If you're serious about running a decent sized system based on the JBLs, then invest in replacing the weak links in that system first.

Cheers,

Pete.

Hey Pete.

The Jbl's on top ( 4733 ) are not mine so I'm not sure they are on great shape. Just imagine they were repaired 10 times each cone ? Wont be the same.

Bad Rock,

I see... Without a bit more info on the "arrangements" here it's hard to give more opinion. Is money an issue? Do you mind buying new (not cheap in the case of SRM450's - gotta be £1100 a pair) and risk your new kit potentially getting thrashed to within a dB of it's life? Is it a regular dance gig or a semi-permanent install?

If I was uncertain about what shape the JBLs are in, I'd want to have a look and listen of the gear first.

If money is an issue yet you still want to be able to put on a (loud) show whatever happens, I'd spend the grand on 4 Behringer B1520s and a big QSC amp.

Money it's almost always an issue but in this case it is only to spend in things that will be useless pretty soon. This system is gonna be replaced by a Nexo gig ( 2 Ps 15 + camco vortex 4.0 amp). So it's not a good idea to spend in a new amp when I'm gonna replace it soon.

I will listen to the jbl's but if they are not in great shape I will have to take them anyway cus they are the only ones in town.

I thought about the Mackies as a back up system and also when the nexo's arrive they will always help me in future jobs where I need something simple to plug and play.

Thank you!
