Thinking of purchasing one of these. Functionality seems great, price is suspiciously low... Any body tried one?
Rob_Beech
I haven't tried this unit, but you have to ask why the price is low and how practical it is.

Yep, it's compact, there's no doubting that, but just how easy is it to use when the pair of wedges on mix 5 is feeding back in the middle of the show?

There's a thread here that might help - it's from a few years back so I'm assuming it hasn't changed since then though...

I dont think the concept of having 31 frequency buttons and a rotary encoder is any more difficult than having 31 faders. it's just different and needs two hands instead of one. I could still work just as fast with such a system. I do too wonder what you get for such a low price.

QUOTE
It wouldn't be a stretch to call Alesis "The Graphic EQ Company." Our MEQ230 is a standard in sound installations and studios, and the DEQ series now carries the torch

Not a very promising start to their description... wink.gif Still, for £300, might be worth a punt.

Good heavens, where is that quote from. Someone ought to go and have a word with themselves.

You see for FOH purposes this concept of buttons and dials isn't too much of a problem. On monitors however it's sometimes nice to be able to just grab something you need in a hurry. I'm sure alot of us on here can have a bit of a blind glance at a graphic in the dark and put our hand on the offending frequency instantly. Finding a button in the dark (even when lit) can be a bit tricky.

I used to use a rack of 6 DEQ2496's. Great units but tricky for monitor work, and of course guest engineers that didn't turn their nose up at the badge on the front, turned their nose up at the concept.

You DO get used to them, but I've gone back to analogue eq's after trying the digital route on monitors. I do use DN9340's for FOH eq's though.

Erm... they're pretty noisy. I'm told tho that it clears up if used with the ADAT option and a digital desk...
Rob_Beech
The issue there is that most digital desks have eq's (maybe better) on board.

They work well filter wise, but they lack headroom (in spite of what the specs may say). A friend is using one with QSC amps (36dB of gain). If he has a really loud band (and thus loud monitors), the EQ will sometimes clip before the amp does.

Missed this improvement by Alesis, until now.
Very useful to adjust many individual inputs on the insert in a diffictult conference situation?
Cause of concern the fiddleness of use in real time & the balanced jacks. I'm awaiting copy of the manual for the DEQ830 to study but on the DEQ230 if you don't press the right buttons when adjusting you change memory and lose the current equlization with all the howls that may followl. The levels are not always easy to set on the in and out but the RTA is useful and pretty !

Bit old fashione but I prefere 31+ visible touchable faders per mix - the digital desk eq-31's are not a real time "panic" substitue being a menu or two away.

I would think this unit be better suited to a large install, where the EQ is set by the install company and locked away in the amp room, not so much where an engineer needs, or wants to adjust settings.

The ADC and DAC is all done on a single 8-channel chip inside. And in short is a pile of pants. However, if you bypass the ADDA conversion (by for example using the ADAT lightpipe ins and outs direct to an 01V), then it works as a graphic should, no complaints.

I have one in the rack which gives me 8 channels of monitor EQ in 1U of rack space cool.gif Yes they're noisy so unusable IMHO for FOH, but for monitor work they save space and money (and they give you a simplified spectrum analyser for each channel to boot).
david.elsbury
How would monitor work be any less demanding of quality than FOH?
MarkPAman
What sort of noise and how much of it?

Is it still noisy when using the ADAT in & out?

I've got a uses for one or two of these at work, but can't live with noticeable noise. I guess I'll have to get hold of one to try.
