Full Version: Stage that extended in front of the PA

Hi,

I am working on an event where someone has proposed a stage where the front edge extends 2.4m in front of the PA. It is a triangular shape so is at its most extended in the middle, and falls away the closer you get to either PA stack.

I have not done a PA for a stage like this before, and wondered if you could offer any advice. I know feedback might be an issue, but I swear I have seen it done before. The tops are do not directly spill onto the stage, but acoustics do funny things in real life :s

Any advice or experience would be appreciated

Can you give a little more information as to how your PA is deployed, such as is it ground stacked, flown or whatever and what make it is?
Generally speaking, if I have a stage that has a thrust or "runway" I get hold of the singer's or speaker's mic and give it a good wave around to see if it has any hot spots. If it's at a festival when time is at an absolute premium during changeover then keeping an eagle "ear" out for feedback is all you can do and advise the singer not to point the mic directly at the system!

We are currently in concept design, but I am expecting it to be a ground stacked Turbo sound flash light system. I am thinking 6 subs a side, with 4 tops.

I am hoping by the time we have wedges on the stage, the mic will only be ~1.8m in front of the PA, and about 5m to the side.

It will probably be absolutely fine tbh. It is done all the time, and if you think about the stuff we get away with on conference style stuff then you'll realise that mics don't feedback half as much as you expect them to. One thing I would say is maybe look at a hypercardiod pattern mic in this application though

I would think about angling the PA so that it is not aiming to cover the front center of the crowd, then using front fills to cover that part of the crowd. I'm really not a fan of having PA behind a band, but this does sound doable.
