I wonder if anyone can help me with this. I am looking for a short sound effect (a second or so) of a bee buzzing. Sounds simple, but I'm looking for a sound which increases in pitch beginning to end (or decreases, I can always reverse it).
Anyone got any ideas? I've searched high and low and even contemplated making a buzz sound into a mic!

If you can find a suitable bee sound, you could always use the "pitch bender" facility in Adobe Audition to shift the pitch for you. (And, if you don't have Audition, you can download a full feature 28 day trial).
It's 2AM for me here, but feel free to PM me tomorrow if you don't want to go to the trouble of doing it yourself--probably a five minute job for me. However, doing it yourself would be what I consider the fun part of sound design!

Thanks for that. I was thinking of using a pitch bender, but couldn't think of a program that would do it. I'll give that a go!

Google "Free Sound Effects" - I've had to do this plenty of times! there's usually a whole load of animal effects, although the quality is not always perfect. get hold of the BBC Sound Effects archive, there's loads on there.

Moderation: Let's not turn this into the 367th topic listing a bunch of different sound effects sources. The BR Wiki has a COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF BOTH FREE AND PAID SOUND EFFECTS SOURCES. If you have any extra suggestions, adding to the Wiki is a good idea (though please stick to places that offer decent quality effects with a known copyright history).
In this case the OP want a fairly easy-to-get recording--but with a special effect at the end.
