Full Version: Is my Amcron Macro-tech 2401 faulty?

I bought an old Amcron Macro-tech 2401 from Ebay and it has a couple of 'issues', despite a thorough hoovering.

1) a bit of a thump when you power it off (OK, I know that's not right);
2) after a while it gets hot and periodically each channel cuts out.

Admittedly I was using it to drive mid/tops, three 8ohm cabs per side, so 2.7 ohms per channel. It wasn't a particularly hot day and its in a well ventilated case with two fans. I thought Amcrons/Crowns were supposed to take this sort of abuse? Or is that just sales spiel?

I don't know if the two problems are related; I did get this advice (both from Crown) about the power off thump:
"It could be a leaky cap in the 15v supply. I would try checking C1 and C2 on the main board."
"You can try placing a .01uf 250v capacitor across the power switch terminals as a filter."

Can anyone recommend where I could get this fixed? ideally somewhere near Exeter.
Many thanks - all advice gratefully received!

It certainly isn't sales spiel. I would certainly recommend someone has a look. Try Marks recommendation, or you could ask crown to do it, they're very good with customer services, even with older products.

Crikey, thanks for the really prompt reply... actually this amp has already paid a visit to Mixermend, and he's now recommending I send it to Crown's UK dealers, http://www.soundtech.co.uk - I'm emailing them now, but I fear the postage to and fro will be pretty expensive.

Thanks again.

I've got a friend who might have a look at it for you. He's bought several dead amps off ebay and got them all going. Works in the middle of dartmoor so not a million miles from exeter. I'll ask him if you want.

The poping thing is known with all the VZ amd M-T range. Its an easy fix. The amps are pretty straight forward inside. The best bet is back to Crown. For the life of me I cant remember who done the Crown we have. Ill find out and let you know. They were very good and quick.

Are they anywhere vaguely near Exeter? If so, it would be great if you could put me in touch with them. Many thanks.
