Hey guys - bit of a newbie-type question here but here goes.

After starting to do sound for bands on a regular basis, im realising that my current sound system is lacking in both volume and clarity.

My current tops (Peavey UL-15's) were fine a couple of years ago when I got them; however they become very shouty and unclear at high SPL's. So the past couple of days I've been looking into possible upgrades for the future and the Turbosound TXD range have caught my eye (amongst others which I cant really afford!)

My question is this - In terms of simple spec's My Peaveys have a higher wattage and rated sensitivity level compared to the Turbo TXD-121 which ive been looking at. I'm well aware turbosound are a far better constructed product, however - would I get better performance out of the TXD-121 compared to the UL-15's?


On the other hand should I be looking at a better range of speakers for what I'm after? (Budget upto £1200 for one Pair, speakers only)

I haven't heard the TXD-121. I have however heard, and used the TXD-151. I'm certainly not the world biggest Turbosound fan, and wouldn't buy any myself (personal preference; Turbosound has a very particular 'sound' which I personally don't like for live music). That being said, I think the TXD are actually a rather nice, un-Turbo-sounding box, and sound a lot clearer and more listenable than many similar sized boxes. They go loud without any noticable distortion, and vocals do sound clean; snare drums sound crisp and the bass is good for a small box. I actually had no idea what price point they came in at, but judging by your budget I'd say if they fit in there they are very good value for money, and I'd be hard pressed to offer an alternative. Certainly, for a speaker running with no kind of processing, the sound is very useable.

As you said, your Peaveys might be higher spec'd but sound harsh at high levels; I don't think you'll find that a problem with the TXDs - they'll probably still sound clean much louder than your current boxes do. Note: feed the Turbos with a lot of amplifier power - at least 500W, and preferably more like 1kW!

without having much time to read the specs, I would suggest that the turbo will continue to sound good when turned up wheras the peavy sound might start to suffer at high volume

that said I think the turbo will need a bigger amp to do it justice

A few months ago, a turbosound TXD 12M based mons rig was purchased at an organisation I work for- we've got something like 5 pairs of wedges, and the 2x15" box as a drumfill and I'm really happy with it - especially considering the price. They're loud, but not distorty loud, they require little EQ, and they work really well in pairs. IIRC all the wedges are run off camco tecton 24.4s and the drumfill is run off a 38.4. Definitely far better than their price tag suggests - in terms of sound/volume I'd rate them above the D&B max 12, and as previously mentioned the sound is very natural and uncoloured- perhaps not quite as much as the EM acoustics stuff, but still that kind of sound.

Crown XLS602

Underpowered for the Turbo's (since they are 8Ohm cabs)

I should think, within budget, you could get a pair of TXDs and a matching XLS602, with change too. Bridge the XLS's. The TXD's will lap up the power, your XLS's are overspecced and will doubtless last forever because of it!

Floating off topic, I understand that the TXD12M sounds "suprisingly like" the TFD, which is what Gilmour uses, and goes for about 2 grand a box...
