Hey guys,

The GLD80 new console from Allen and Heath has now arrived. No longer is it just a prototype on an exhibition stand or something glossy to look at on website.

It's set up in our demo area and ready to play with.

We'll announce dates for a digifest event with the gld80 and the Yamaha cl5 very soon..

However if you want to come and play with it please drop me a line.

Cheers

Matt

A little further south west - we will have to wait until Saturday 21st April to get our hands on one - as Audio Technica (new distributors for Allen & Heath) - will be showing the GLD mixer on their stand at the Analogue to Digital EXPO in Exeter.

Audio Technica have suffered from a break in - which will leave them very short of stock:

Thieves broke into a delivery lorry parked outside Audio-Technica’s Leeds warehouse during the morning of Tuesday 10 April and made off with 15 GLD-AR2412 AudioRacks.

These units won't be of much use to the thieves - without the mixers of course, so perhaps we should all be on the look out for some very dodgy deals.......

That's a shame. At least the serial numbers should be easy to remember! :)

I had a play with one on monday on the AT stand at PLASA focus, looks very good, is very very intuitive but obviously cannot talk sonics. Very tempting pricing too

So we've had the board set up the demo area and today I got a good chance to play with it, and listen to it..

On first glance I found the desk really easy to operate..

Patching the inputs and outputs was simple. There's a great feature where you can tell the desk the first channel and last channel you want to patch, and it does the rest for you. Dragging and dropping channels into the layers is easy. Much simpler than most consoles. Also the pop up keyboard makes it easy to name channels.. No need to put pushing lots of scroll wheels or arrow keys.

Console config is great. You can pick what to do with your busses.. Stereo axes, mono axes, stereo groups, mono groups, fx, stereo matrix, mono matrix.. Mix and match..

However there are a few features which you need to think about or learn how to use...

Routing inputs to groups, and assigning matrices is cool, but I couldn't see an easy way to tell where each channel is going. Maybe in a future firmware the console can bring up little numbers on the screens to show routing.. Especially for DCA's..

Stereo linking is known as "ganging channels" however you are limited to the number of ganging groups you can have. A cool feature is you can gang any channels you like and also choose which parameters to gang. It means you only need to have 1 overhead fader your first late, and you can have the other fader on page 4.. This works nicely..

Monitor output (aviom) was really easy to patch and worked well. I've had an aviom unit next to the desk and it worked well.

So I've had a few hours with a multitrack and a proper play. Preamps sound great..

I'll gonna get it out on a few gigs over the next couple of weeks and will report back shortly..

First impressions are that at this price, there's not much else around which can beat it.

I like the new approach that A&H have taken to scenes, where everything is stored, and you "filter" what you want to recall. it's like scene safes, except they're per scene, not per show. Also like the GL-like form. Personally, I'm not a fan of tall consoles that one has to peer over, the GLD is a lot more compact. Would make a brilliant monitor board to an iLive FoH desk.

Matt.....

Does the new GLD offer computer ethernet control / iPad control? I see there is an ethernet port on the desk but it said it was not currently used???
Is this something that may be added to a future software update??

Considering this over the Roland. Will take a look when next over.

The ethernet port is to connect to a router for iPad control (not available yet). I did ask but unfortunately there won't be an offline editor or live control via PC or Mac, just the iPad control (and possibly iPhone control for individual monitor mixes).
