I used to have some older JBL MP418 subs and though they were excellent, but now I've bought a JBL SRX728 sub and am gonna power it with an EV P3000 bridged into 4 ohms. I'm getting another in another 2 months time so will be buying either another P3000 if I can find one used. I haven't got an amp yet to power the sub and with christmas coming up, well, I'll be saving for presents. So how much louder are the SRX728 subs compared to the MP418 subs guys? JBL tell me the SRX728 gives out the spl of 4 MP418 subs, but thats from the manufacturer, and they always hype specs and lie to people about various specs and info.

Have any of you guys heard both? <_<

But it's the same manufacturer as the other box. So if they ARE hyped up, they'll both be hyped up.

Maybe so, but that doesn't answer my question at all. Saying that though, I did test the MP418 when I had 4 of them in the past and the output read 125db on the spl meter, measured 1 metre away from the grille of one of the subs, with 750 watts rms input each sub, in half space, with 4 stacked together, 2 high and 2 wide in a square configuration, so that I suppose means a more accurate peak rating would be about 131db, as apoosed to the 135db in half space like the spec says. I had 2 on each channel of a QSC PLX-3002 amplifier running into 2 ohms at 1,500 watts per channel. But I've never heard the SRX728 and have no way of hearing them because no-one has any anywhere near me, plus I cant remember exactly what the MP418 subs sounded like apart from remembering that they were chest rattling when pushed, so much so that it felt like your organs were being vibrated to bits until there was nothing left. But I'd still like to know if the SRX728 subs are louder than a pair of MP418 subs, and if so, roughly how much louder.

A friend just switched from four MP418 to two SRX728. He is very happy with the performance improvement. (Power in both cases: 1x RMX4050HD.)

I've heard and driven MP418s. They are a decent box.

The first time I heard 728s, there were two per side driven by PLX3102s. I was underwhelmed.

The second time I heard 728s, there was one per side, both driven by one side of a K2. They sounded very good - very clean - and I could not believe that 800W/box was doing that.

Thats what my original thought was as to what amplifier to drive my SRX728. I'm getting anohtre in febuary, and was thinking about powering them, each with a bridged Crown K2 amp, giving each sub 2,500 watts. Have you ever heard a QSC RMX2450 running an SRX728 because I was thinking about getting one temporarily for running my SRX728 that I have now, until I get another sub and then get round to getting 2 K2 amps. I been thinking my idea above about running the sub I have now on an EV P3000 is maybe a wrong idea because 3,000 watts might be too much power for the kinds of music I play of which one style is heavily compressed, and the other is very, very dynamic with an awesome amount of bass, even more than reggae, which itself has a lot of bass in.
