Could anyone tell me where I could find giant fake gemstones, about 5 - 15cms in diameter. Any colour but preferably red, black or clear?

Hi ruby - welcome to the Blue Room :)

I found this site, although many items seem to be sold out for months to come at the time of writing (maybe they could point you at an alternative source).

Fake gems of this size seem to be mostly made from acrylic. Try searching Google and fleaBay for acrylic gems, acrylic gemstones or acrylic crystals for more results than you can shake a stick at.

Note that acrylic gems don't sparkle like the real thing. For sparkle, try throwing in some Swarovski crystals.

Hope that helps.

If you draw an absolute blank or hit a budget wall you could try just buying one, then taking a two part plaster cast of it. Then using that as a mould to cast some more in a clear resin. You could leave the resin clear for diamonds or add some resin dye to achieve the colours you want. Fairly skilled task but nothing that a bit of reading up on the techniques wouldn't make possible.
Basically, I plug stuff in.

Hi Ruby! Oops! Hope both the links work. Go to Archie McPhee if not!

Try a Google for "Giant Fake Diamonds or Gems"

I found a British site with some clear, green, red and blue that look like giant cut gems. I lost the link but it's out there.

Also, here's a terrific site for gifts, etc:

http://www.mcphee.com/items/11782.html

They have a bigger version for lots more $

Good Luck!!
