Budget sound

Just trying to look for some decent radio mics for a small to medium scale touring Musical in Scotland next year. The problem as always is lack of budget, with a six week tour and 9 mics needed the prices add up. I have previously used Sennheiser EW100-series which are very average in quality and coverage.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of using budget lapel mics, are there any makes better than others or has anyone got any really good deals from hire companies.

My school had 6 Trantec S3500s (with the receivers racked 2 per 1U width in a sprung flight case and a 2U lockable tray to keep the lapel bits in) which worked a treat, even with reasonable coverage over 30m (until they put in more multicore connections at the stage end so I could have the recievers nested offstage which improved reliability when the batteries were on their way out). I think they were about £250/ea for lapel, beltpack + reciever (although we had also had a power splitter and two diversity aerial distributors to feed the receivers - dunno costing). If you can have your receivers offstage it seems gemini do some dead cheap stuff, but can't help much beyond that.

Hope that helps.
