IES PB4x problem

Humey

Recommended Posts

I am using a IES PB4x dimmer bar in a small studio space. I have 4 x PAREC running however whilst setting up the DMX a lamp blew. I replaced it and now that channel no longer works. I have replaced the fuse and checked the lantern on a different channel and all works fine. The Power bar itself shows no faults on the display.

Any ideas?

That the blowing of the Par lamp has taken out the fuse that is protecting that channel? Or a Fuse on the circuit board inside that protects that channel. Or has taken out some cheap crummy component.

The last 2 suggestions can be dangerous (As you would be poking around inside the casing)

-Never used the product, but in general most small dimmers and dimmer bar's should have fuses somewhere to protect each channel.

Think these products are a bit different to your average "cheap" dimmer or dimmer bar, they're an ETC product. And he did say he replaced the channel fuse and still no go... :)

This dimmer bar uses IGBT dimming, similar to a triac, but slightly different way of switching the waveform. My bet is that this is the component that has gone. Occasionally the short circuit current [edit: the short circuit current when the lamp blows] can be so great that it takes out the IGBT/triac.

Might be a case of taking it to get serviced, probably not the best thing to do unless you're confident with mains level component servicing :)

Where in the world are you, perhaps someone can recommend a service agent.

If you're in London, then ETC themselves are probably the nearest service centre for this, being based in Acton.

We have a lot of IES PM4-21X dimmers in our studio, as well as a PB4-X, and the dimming module is the same.

I've had a couple of instances where one of the channels had failed, and the power module (where the channel fuse is located; these can be removed individually from the back of the unit) needed sending to ETC for repair.

However, in all these instances, the LCD display indicated an error code 'd' on the channel in question (as per page 13 of the manual linked above).

It's a bit strange your unit is not showing any fault on the display.

ETC tech support would be best able to advise: http://www.etcconnect.com/contact.aspx
