If you want a "proper" grey shirt, than buy a grey one, they are sold everywhere and are not expensive.

If you want a once white shirt that has gone grey through use and poor laundering, then buy a cheap white one and machine wash it several times with black or dull coloured items. Washing with a few old black t shirts should do the trick. Think twice about washing the white shirt with NEW black t shirts, or enough dye may transfer to render it much darker than you want.

Or buy a cheap white one, wear it and machine wash WITH NO DETERGENT, repeat the wearing and washing without detergent as needed. The regular washing will render it reasonably hygienic and not liable to stink, but the absence of detergent will soon render it off white.

After the production, the shirt should still be useable for gardening or rough work.
