6th Order
I've had our LS9 for a while now and while I'm very pleased with most of the features, I've never quite managed to get a good pecussion reverb. Now I realise that this is a very subjective topic, but I'd appreciate the thoughts and advice of anyone who has experience of the LS9 effects (and the M7CL effects too, which are the same I think?) I'd like a short, bright almost fizzy reverb for use on the snare drum. I can't get the plate to do it (yet) is it me? Possibly a tough question, but consider the challenge laid down...! Bobbsy
Are you just using the existing presets or have you already tried adjusting the various parameters on the effects without success. As you say, the effect you want is subjective but I'd start with the Plate Reverb but (by ear) shorten both the reverb time (down to well under a second) and initial delay (down to virtually immediate). I'd up the figure in "High Ratio" and cut down the "Low Ratio" a bit (but not totally). I'd make the Early Reflections/Reverb delay (I think lablelled E/R Delay a fairly low number and set the E/R Balance highish so you have more early reflections than long-tail reverb. Finally, with whatever you're using for effects return on your board somewhere around your operating positing, I'd use the density control to set how much reverb I want. Sorry I can't be specific with numbers but I don't have a mixer in front of me right now--and your ears are likely different from mine anyway. However, once you get a sound you like don't forget to save it, both in the board but also to Studio Manager so if you accidentally do a reset you don't have to do all this again! 6th Order
Bobbsy you are a legend, that's exactly what I was hoping for. Programming effects in the depth you can on these desks is not something I've had to do before. In my experience I've just be given whatever unit was in stock and had to work off the presets. (starting of with the Gold Plate on the good old lexicon Alex!) I had started to play with the effects, but there are so many parameters I thought I'd get a bit more advice, having got to the end of my knowledge. One more question, what's the thinking behind setting the amount of reverb from the density control? or did you mean just while I'm setting the effect up? Bobbsy
Re-reading my post I realise I wasn't clear on the "Density" bit...sorry! The Density refers to how tightly packed individual reflections are--low settings on this can sound a bit course on percussive sounds (but can work on vocals) where higher settings will probably suit your snare better. However, I find that the Density setting interacts quite a lot with the wet/dry mix that I assume you control by bringing the reverb back in on a spare channel, hence my comment about setting the wet/dry the way you like it, THEN adjusting the Density control. Hope this makes sense! Bob
