Hey Guys,

So ou school just bought some new DMX controlled moving heads and we need a new Controller. The school made one wish clear it should be digital and last for the nest 10 or more years. Some more information it should have:

- motorized faders

- touchscreens if possible multiple or atlas possible to connect more to it

- 3D program

- easy to use

Do you have any idea which I was already thinking of a used Grandma 1 desk.

Greetings from Finland, Tim.

Buying new will cost more cash but you should get some form of warranty and perhaps some training in how it works, maybe even some long term product support. Second user kit comes as is, with all faults and problems and if there is no local support you will be on your own.

Why do you need motorised faders, that limits you to a very few very expensive consoles - Avolites Sapphire Touch is the only other one I know of.

Well what would be a controller without motorised faders. Which would be for a school affordable, but still does have the 3D program or a possibility to connect it with a 3D program.

What does "Affordable" mean, how much money do you have to spend?

How many lights are you trying to control?

Motorised faders are rare on lighting consoles. I don't know why, as they are very common on sound desks, but that's the way it is.

You can use a separate 3D program such as Capture (http://www.capturesweden.com) to show output from any console that has ethernet output.

Capture is built into Avolites consoles.

Chamsys consoles are also very popular and have a built in 3d program.

Well we have right now a SGM Studio 12 Scan control. We want to go Digital now and yes I do own a Daslight DVC2. The only Problem with that is, its already outdated and pretty old and the 3D software isn't really good. That 3D software Capture is pretty nice but our console doesn't have an ethernet output, because it is so old.

Could you explain what you understand by the term "digital"? Your current desk is digital...

Perhaps Cue stack memory based is what is meant, instead of 2-scene preset?

Some of the ETC desks have motorised faders too; Eos Ti, Gio, Gio @5, (plus there's the option to add motorised wings) and built in touch screens on the desks. Then add Capture if need be.

Is this desk to be used to teach students how to program / operate lighting as part of a course or is it just to facilitate in-house productions?

I have already used GrandMA systems so it is not really a big jump for me

Maybe not for you but once you leave that school, your successors may struggle. I can't think of a desk that would be worse than MA in a school environment!

Ok, well that is a good point.

Have a look at Chamsys MQ500 - if you're thinking along the lines of GrandMA you shouldn't be disappointed. The Chamsys infrastructure is well worth getting into - very scalable and usable in a school environment. I should know, I put Chamsys into my last school with great success!
