Barney
Hi BR, I'm looking for a stapler that takes wide staples - at least 14 mm clear between the staple legs. Wider is ok, but I'd rather not go much more than 20 mm. The actual staple length (of the legs) isn't too important: I'd say 6 mm minimum but, again, not too long for ease of fixing. I'd rather go electric than manual, and air powered via a copmresser is not an option in this case. I've looked at a couple of units on line (e.g. from Stanley, Bostitch, etc) but haven't managed to find one that takes the wider staples (although the tech details aren't always very clear). Does anyone know of anything suitable, from the UK? I'd rather not spend more than about £100 as it is only for a one-off use. If the stapler can also take brads, then that would open it up to further use in the future - ideal but not essential. At a push, I could hire, but I'd rather purchase as I'm sure to be doing the same thing again (infrequently though). The application is for stapling RGB LED tape to pieces of set/ply (and not go through the tape itself, which is about 12 mm wide). I don't want to go along the lines of double-sided tape for this application, thanks. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance,Barney
the kid
http://www.thehandandpowertoolcentre.co.uk/ have helped me out before. Rapid and arrow are always a good bet for staple guns. Is the tape suitable to be stapled ? not exposed tracks?
IRW
Hmm...LED tape you say...would 'cable stapler' be the magic google term?
Barney
Thanks Kid,I'll check out that link and give them a call. The tape is plastic coated, so no problem with stapling. I actually did something similar last year, but the tape was not as wide, meaning a standard width staple worked fine. Ian,I tried looking for cable stapler, but my google-fu deserted me - I could only find ones that did standard width staples. Also, would prefer a flat crown staple rather than domed (for cables) as the LED tape is flat. I'll search again though, thanks. Barney
Dave m
can't really help but Lidl/Aldi often have (240v) very cheap things like electric staple guns that are good for occasional use. Would a hot glue gun be an alternative?A mate used to hot glue cables and plastic trunking up.
billy jim
Depending on your layout and visibility, could you use domestic sparky cable clips, twin and earth style?
Barney
Thanks for the ideas. Just in case anybody else comes across this problem, I bought an Arrow T72 stapler in the end - the staples have a 12 mm clear opening. There didn't seem to be many other options. The cable clips were a good idea, but would need some sort of (foam?) packing to be used to keep the LED tape flat due to the depth of the clip. The T72 staples gave a similar problem (they have an insulated 5mm saddle), but a bit of careful tinkering with the staples meant that the saddle could be turned over, giving a flush fit to the tape. This also means the staples can be pulled out easier with pliers without damaging the tape. Cheers all,Barney
