X32 Compact

I'm in the process of preparing a recommendation for a new desk for a church, and am close to settling on the X32 Compact. It was a close run thing - nearly went for a ZED, but the additinal facilities swung the decision. Principally the ability to add individual monitor mixing for the musicians without much extra effort.

I wondered if anyone near me (Bournemouth area) actually had a Compact that I could demo to interested parties? I've got access to the full size X32, but not a Compact.

Sorry, no compact here but we are full size x32 users since the first shipment arrived. It works very well for any church that can live within the 40 channel budget.

We have a preinstalled analog multicore so don't use S16 stage boxes. We do use the iPad remote control now and it is excellent.

If there is anything we can do to assist please PM. We are in Ferndown so very close to Bournemouth.

Hi Alan. Yes, I knew about your X32 - I'm the minister at the United Church! We'll come round for some training sessions some time! The Compact would be a better fit for our space, and our existing snake is too short for the new location, so an S16 is an obvious partner for it. Didn't realise you were on here too.

Don't count out the x32r and iPad option if you are space constrained. It can make for a very tidy system with shorter cable runs.

Thought about it, but not for very long. Not having a physical controls surface would deter many of our operators, and we would still need much the same cable runs - if the X32R were at the platform, then we would need a stagebox at the rear for connection to the PC, to the radio receivers, to the CD player and other playback devices, so we would still need the Cat5 run front/back just the same as if we had an X32 at the back. Saves a few quid, and as you say saves space, but I don't think it would suit us. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

We've got a compact, but not used it in serious anger yet.

It is missing a couple of key front panel features compared to the big boy, and has (I thinkl!) one extra feature. The important missings are the four aux sends, and the four assignable knobs. The extra is the ability to press two input channel layer buttons together and get an extra eight input faders on the right hand fader bank. All the internal gubbins work identically acorss the range.

We think this is an acceptable tradeoff for our use, which is small scale theatre. The full size X32 would be difficult to accomodate physically, and the cash saved went twoards S16s and a Dante card.

Must still have sends on faders though David? I have to admit I almost literally never use the actual aux send controls on our full-scale x32. Pretty much the only time I use them is demonstrating the aux sends when teaching an experienced analogue console user, before showing them sends on fader.

Apologies, I hadnt read the above solution properly and thought it was bus masters on the encoders for some reason.

It's interesting the pushing two layer buttons together, as it would be nice in some instances to get 24 input channels across a full size x32 on some occasions, I wonder if that requires any hardware changes or whether it is entirely software change.

yes compact has sends on fader button.

It would be difficult to do the two layer press on the full X32 because each layer is a bank of 16, and the master section is only 8.

where as the compact and producer are arranged in banks of 8 so it fits easily in the master section.

if there was a shift key of some description that would allow one layer and the second half/9-16 of another layer to be displayed on the master section that would be good. normal two layer press would give first half of other layer in the master section

who knows

firmware 3.0

OK - so the major part of the decision making is done. But I'm wondering about the stage box. I notice that Behringer have 2 16 input stage boxes; the S16 (which I know and have used) and the SB16 (which doesn't seem to be available yet) Is it real, or just someting due to be available in a while. The key differences seem to be the ability to chain a second unit, and the built-in hub for the personal monitor system. Anyone have any ideas or opinions on whether this is worth waiting for? As far as I can tell, it will be at a very similar price point to the S16 - would you wait?

you will be waiting at least 12 months.

the S32 isn't out yet.

...The key differences seem to be the ability to chain a second unit...

Unless I've misread what you're saying you can chain two S16s as well though - the S16 has dual AES50 and will translate/patch the inputs & outputs from one onto the other (combined with it's local inputs) to cascade - the SD16 claims you can combine up to 3 to give 48ch to FOH (I don't know what you'll do with those extra 16channels at FOH though?) and it's not quite clear how the patching on the boxes works as they don't seem to have a screen & menu like the S16s.
