'Magically' appearing flowers through scenery...

Now, after a discussion last evening I'm looking for a solution to an idea...

What we WANT to happen is for a (fairly large) number of flowers to magically appear on the walls of the set for panto - ideally rose-like flowers.

The principle is in theory simple, in that it needs to be like the kids' magic trick where the feathery-type flower appears from a wand - a bit like this one.

The flowers we need though won't be anywhere near as large as this - probably only 3 or 4 inches diameter. Obviously we'd need short tubes fixed to the back of the scenic pieces, so that the flowers would be pushed through on cue by crew, appearing as if by magic to the audience.

So - will be Googling 'magic flowers' of course, but that's not produced much of a result as yet - though as there MAY be a name for the type of effect we want I could be searching for the wrong string. :)

Anyone have any concrete ideas, please?

Is this or these the sort of thing you mean? Spring flowers, which of course will get lots of false matches.

The second ones at Merlin look possible (the first appears to have bunches rather than a single flower).

I've mailed them for comments, thanks.

All spring flowers are individual. When sold as a bunch they are simply tied together on string so 5 seconds with the scissors and you will have individual flowers. They won't work through a tube as described though.

All feather flowers will work in a tube as you described. Google feather flowers and or feather flower bouquets. A bouquet can be turned in to individual flowers with a pair of wire cutters.

Don't buy "blooming bouquet" flowers as they are just feather flowers and some plastic tubes painted green.

Feather flowers are what you want - see this clip of Rolf Dinardi who made a speciality of them. He starts with the coloured silks but goes on to feather flowers
a bit like Kardomah did with flags. They are not particularly cheap if I recall aright.

Good quality ones that look just like real flowers are expensive but there's now many factories in the Far East churning out cartoon style feather-flowers which would suit this application (though only last one or two seasons) for under £1 per bloom.

If I can find a suitable supplier, they only have to last two weeks :)

In terms of durability there's nothing in between spring flowers (which are made of tissue paper) and feather flowers. Go googling the usual chinese wholesale websites and you'll find plenty of sources for budget feather flowers for magicians.
