Cable identification

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Just wondering what your preferred method of cable management/identification is? We're currently using a barcoded system for all our physical pieces (lanterns/desks/etc), but need some way of keeping track of our cables.

We have found something here. This is sort of what we're looking for, especially as they have their own barcodes etc, and can be wrapped around.

What do you think?

To do what?

For pat testing we use a robin tester and buy their labels, or at least use the labels that came with the machine.

They fall off the actual lantern due to heat and a dusty surface, but have found that rolling them onto the cable works well.

A few fall off in a year but not many.

We used to use cleR heat shrink over paper labels but that involved taking the plug off the end.We also (years back) had heat shrink labels from concord with a corporate id but again only useful if making the leads up and adding I'd at the time.

I use the Le Mark wrap-around barcode labels. No cheap, but totally customisable. The ones I bought have a logo and barcode on a 50mm section, with 100mm of clear self-adhesive that wraps round and secures the label. We use them on adaptors, cable and lanterns, applied around the yoke.

The generic barcode reader connected to the new Megger appliance tester is reading them a dream, a year after first applying the labels.

+1. Ours are very similar- I don't think they're quite as big as Jonathan's, but we supplement with some clear heatshrink over the cable/yoke as well- in the case of lanterns, it helps prevent the label going walkies, and in the case of cables, it stiffens that small section a little to help prevent the barcode flexing and cracking.
