PLI for event organisers

Over the summer months we cover a brace of local community events, fetes, gala days, etc.

One of my customers was chatting to me yesterday and bemoaning the increase in their PLI costs. They're a single-day event, in a public park. It's a typical local gala day programme, with a crowning, a couple of bands performing, inflatables, and around 20 stalls.

They're being charged roughly £500 for insurance, apparently this has gone up from around £350 in previous years. I've no idea whether this is a typical figure or not, but instinctively it feels a bit high, given that it's a significant fraction of what my company is charged for 365 days worth of cover. As far as I'm aware they haven't had any claims in the past and all the contractors on site will presumably have their own PLI policies.

Can anyone recommend good places for alternative quotes?

It all depends what cover they have for how many punters, how many staff and whether equipment is covered since most event insurances come as "packages".

Firstly the demands of the licensing officer or council parks department can make things awkward so good relations there make the biggest difference. Then a good broker helps inordinately and I used Torribles for years before Murray's uncle retired. The broker not only helps get the cheapest but the most appropriate cover. Some packages include stuff that isn't "essential". Next check the council or other landowner who should hold insurance for the public space anyway, you can sometimes "piggyback" on theirs. Lastly look to your brokers for cover for multiple events either in the same venue or the same district.

One of the problems has been the ever increasing level of cover demanded by Local Authorities for users of their parks, this has impacted on premiums. They must shop around. You can't compare it with cover for a business. The risks for events are rated quite differently.

Ive seen this before.

Directly related to the professionalism and presentation of the event management plan and risk assessments.

One local gala needed road closures. Thought having a volunteer stood in the road with their hand up was adequate, they didn't need road closure signs or barriers.

Insurance asked what was going on, and when their 'back of fag packet' idea was given, was flatly refused. when they managed to cobble together some god awful copy and paste management plan, the risk was assessed, and revised premium assigned to it.

Just because something hasn't happened, doesn't mean they don't think its all ok, and price at the lower end.

go back to them and ask why its gone up. There may be something you can mitigate against.
