allenav
I have been having a mare using cheaper domestic wifi routers on large venues with drop out etc. Does anyone on here that regularly does large conference and arena shows have some options on a decent gig worthy wifi systems that I can connect to yamaha desk. I don't want to spend thousands but something up from a maplins/cpc home router would be a bonus. Also something that doesn't require me running Cat5 and additional repeaters /extenders would be best. Thanks in advance.
smalljoshua
The kit from Ubiquiti is pretty bullet proof. http://ubnt.com Josh
J Pearce
I'm not regularly in arenas, but I have had good success with Draytek equipment in large theatres, with brick walls and balconies in the way of the signal, and outdoors with big metal stages in the way. Pete McCrea
I'd second smalljoshua's suggestion of Ubiquiti kit.
emsgeorge
Ubiquiti kit all the way - with a secondary option of draytek routers (much much easier port forwarding on them rather than some other brands) If you need to get wifi 'point to point', then they do some great kit that you literally point at each other, connect a cat5 in each end, and away you go. dbuckley
When one says "Ubiquiti" for an access point, would that be something like the AirGateway or AirGateway-LR? These are silly cheap, and thus look far too good to be true...

These are silly cheap, and thus look far too good to be true... Airgateway are for point to point links they are not access points even though that is what the Ubiquiti page describes it as. There isn't such things as a 'professional' WiFi router as in the market these things are aimed at you have separate access points and routing equipment. In terms of the original question Ubiquiti's range of access points are at http://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/ These are controller managed as is normal in the enterprise world so you also need a computer running the Unifi software somewhere. You also need something on the network serving DHCP and DNS. Statically addressing laptops and things like iOS devices is a pain and iOS devices in particular get very annoyed if there isn't a working DNS server on the network. Unifi stuff is cheap but it works well, we are running 6 UAP-Pro serving both Eduroam and our show networks and 9 Unifi network video cameras and it all works well. It's not as featureful as the high end gear from the likes of Cisco, Ruckus or Aruba however you don't need those features unless you have extremely high density deployments, very hostile environments or need things that the Unifi gear can't do like 8 SSIDs. dbuckley
Not quite what I was hoping to hear :) I'm just threadjacking here, but... I too would like something that I can bung in a theatre with the thick walls and the like and will just work reasonably. I've a passing familiarity with Ubiquiti kit for point-to-point middling-distance network links, so from the above I was kind of hoping that they would have a killer access point in the domestic sense of the word, rather than the enterprise, something a bit better than the run-of-the-mill. Ay well, never mind. I've not touched Draytek in some years and have never even heard of Meraki until today...
smalljoshua
I've got good things to say for the TP-Link equipment too. It's good for quick up applications where the Ubiquiti stuff is overkill. The range and through wall distance isn't near that of the Ubiquiti gear though. Josh

Robin D
I've found the one of HP Wireless we are trialling very good (as were the prior 3Com units on which I suspect they are based). They need Power Over Ethernet or a POE power supply.
MarkPAman
There must be a reason why I seem to keep spotting these Cisco units in places where Wifi is important.......
